Once Bitten

A majority of Americans are not only worried about violence after the election – they’re doing something about it:

When asked about just what sort of violence they expected to see, those polled responded with “riots,” “looting,” “burning” as some of their predictions. “Trashing of cities” was another response.

The YouGov poll was completed between October 1 – 2, 2020 and used 1,503 respondents.

It followed another poll released October 1 that found 61 percent of Americans agree with the concern the U.S. could be on the verge of another Civil War.

Additionally, 52 percent of consumers have also stockpiled food or essential goods in anticipation of social unrest tied to a resurgence of coronavirus in the coming months and/ or the election.

Unmentioned – they’re also gunning up numbers that crush all previous records.

This could be good news for conservatism in the long run; genuinely self-reliant people tend not to vote “progressive”.

Provided the GOP doesn’t screw it up…

…oh.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

  1. I think there’s something else going on with these same people. Something related. I’ve been around since Johnson-Goldwater and I don’t recall anything like the excitement like you see for Trump for any other Republican. There have been Trump-flag pickup parades in NYC, LA, and just recently down 494 in Minnetonka. In my world, pickup drivers/owners are not normally connected with political activism.

That kind of emotion, that level of emotion is a bit hard to control. If (or let’s be honest, when) the Democrats cheat enough to taint or defeat Trump et al, I wonder if the joy exhibited now will blow right through disappointment, resignation and apathy to go straight to anger.

  2. You are ignoring fact intelligence-challenged reprobates are gunning up as well. That is NOT good news.

  3. jpa, two things. I know there are some “intelligence-challenged reprobates” among the [deer] hunting crowd, but not many. I don’t think there’s as much to fear from a Linden Hills white liberal with a brand new mouse gun compared to someone who knows how to safely and confidently handle, with deadly results, a .30-30 long gun.

Second, I would remind you that the 2nd amendment is for all American citizens. Once the “intelligence-challenged reprobates” have crossed the line to a gun purchase, there’s a reasonably good chance that some portion of them are starting to appreciate the 2nd and wonder about all the other blue governance policies as well (I think bike or boss commented on this recently).

  4. I’m genuinely puzzled by my Liberal acquaintences. They feel the need to buy a gun to protect their families because Democrat politicians can’t/won’t keep the peace. They waited for a Permit to Purchase, stood in line to buy the gun, probably spent $1,000 all told, but fully intend to vote for the candidate whose party promises to take away their brand-new firearm leaving them defenseless against the mob.

What’s the mental contortion which enables them to make sense of that?

  5. I think it’s called compartmentalization, JD.

Compartmentalization is a subconscious psychological defense mechanism used to avoid cognitive dissonance, or the mental discomfort and anxiety caused by a person’s having conflicting values, cognitions, emotions, beliefs, etc. within themselves.

  6. JD,

Just tell the dupes that since they want to just give up the gun anyway, they might as well just give it to you. You can then “redistribute” the gun to a poor, single, deserving Republican mom.

  7. I think, for many, voting progressive is equated to being a good person. This holds true even when they recognize that progressive policies are unjust or will hurt them.
They believe that however bad Democrat policies are, Republican policies are worse. Yep, the Dems might go overboard on gun laws, but the GOP only wants to loosen gun laws to allow arm white supremacists to own assault rifles so they can shoot Black people.
The Democrats are almost literally at war with the other half of the US population. They all believe they are in the seventh grade playing Atticus Finch in the school play, that’s why their political reasoning is so immature. In their hearts they do not believe that any Black man has raped a white woman. The world is a more complicated place than that.
