This Should Be A Surprise To Nobody

People with carry permits commit gun crimes at about 15% the rate…

…of police.

“With about 685,464 full-time police officers in the U.S. from 2005 to 2007, we find that there were about 103 crimes per hundred thousand officers,” the report reads. “For the U.S. population as a whole, the crime rate was 37 times higher—3,813 per hundred thousand people.”

The study refers to Texas and Florida, which it says mirror most other states, to compare permit holders with police and the overall population. It used data from 1987 through 2015.

“We find that permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at less than a sixth the rate for police officers,” the report says. “Among police, firearms violations occur at a rate of 16.5 per 100,000 officers. Among permit holders in Florida and Texas, the rate is only 2.4 per 100,000.10. That is just one-seventh of the rate for police officers.”

And that includes Florida, which is…well, Florida.

  1. In defense of the police the average person with a conceal and carry permit faces one or two situtations (at most) where they might have to use the gun. Cops do that on a weekly basis. Its apples to oranges Mitch, you should know that.

  2. PoD, these studies refer to ALL crimes, not just gun related ones. The linked article lists the total number of crimes in the study and then the number that are gun related.

  3. still, I believe my point stands because it is the polices job to respond and react to crime. It is not the job of a CNC permit holder to do that in any situation.

Nor, technically, is it the job of the police to do so. They have no legal requirement to defend or assist you, as has been explicitly stated by many, many court decisions. It’s only when they purposefully act to put you in danger that they lose their immunity, as is the case where the San Jose people were stripped of immunity for funneling Trump supporters directly into a crowd of violent lefties. (Ah, the “mostly peaceful” protesters lefties are!)

“Should” is such a nice qualifier, but common sense isn’t as common as it should be. And for folks as uninformed about guns as leftists, common sense is nearly nonexistent.

  6. Prince, I think you’re reading the article incorrectly.

If it said: “Police shoot people more than CCW permit holders do,” we’d all be saying: “Well, duh” and your comments would make sense.

If the article said: “Police officers beat their wives more than CCW permit holders do,” we’d all be saying: “Whoa, what’s going on here?”

  7. I think the trick to what POD is saying is to ask the question of what portion of crimes for which the police are convicted occur on the job. My impression is due to many reasons, starting with the infamous “blue wall of silence”, the majority of crimes for which officers are arrested and convicted occur off the job.

There is still, then, the question of whether those off the job arrests are related to on the job stress. We might gain some insight by comparing arrest rates for officers to others with similarly stressful jobs–say ones for which the injury/death rates are similar to, or worse than, being a police officer.

That noted, we still can rejoice that all of those dangerous carry permit holders do appear to be more responsible, as measured this way, than the only people who it’s safe to give a gun to. :^)

  8. I may have misread it, if I did I apologize. It just didnt seem to add up at first glance, then again I get up at 5am on weekdays now so I may have been in a haze during my initial analysis

  9. I don’t think you misread it, POD. It’s just that the interpretation of the data depends very strongly on evidence not submitted. We can only guess whether those convictions were on the job or not.

  10. Nerd, San Jose is one of the many Cali cities teetering on bankruptcy. Hopefully, that lawsuit will help them along with that.

    What filthy people leftists are.
