A Good Guy With A Gun

A man walked into an Oklahoma restaurant…

… It sounds like the beginning of a joke. It’s not. He opened fire, injuring four.

Then, a good guy with a gun saved the day:

A man “opened fire” Thursday in an Oklahoma restaurant, leaving at least four people injured, before he was fatally shot by a bystander, police said.

I’m going to guess there aren’t going to be a lot of restaurant shootings in Oklahoma anytime soon.

  1. Of course, a CNN report says that the armed citizen “gunned down’ the shooter.

  2. Rick,

OK ranks high almost entirely because it’s got a fairly high-crime urban area in the middle of a very sparesely-populated state.

In other words, the same reason Illinois’, Michigan’s, or for that matter Minnesota’s crime rates are as high as they are.

And while there is very little correlation between street crime and spree shootings, there IS one between spree killings and gun free zones. Which are rather rare in OK.

  3. Report I heard on the radio was that two permit holders had to go to their cars to get their weapons and engage the shooter. Was the restaurant a target rich (gun-free) zone?

  4. Interestingly, while Oklahoma is 5th in gun deaths overall, they’re 10th in murder and 14th in gun murders. So we would infer that a great portion of Rick’s dismal statistic is suicides. The state was 8th overall in suicide rates, meaning that the bigger issue is not guns, but depression and the like.

  5. You’re losing the thread of RickDFL’s narrative, MBerg. That narratives is that guns are so deadly that in the wrong hands they can kill tens of people, even by accidental discharge, but in the hands of trained concealed weapon carriers, guns are so useless against a spree killer you might as well bombard the bad guy with marshmallows.
