Freedom Friday

The record number of background checks received by the National Instant Check System indicate – the second record in a row set on Black Friday – indicate enough firearms were sold in one day to outfit every single active duty Marine:

According to the FBI, over 200,000 background check requests associated with the purchase of a firearm were submitted to the agency on Black Friday, marking a new single-day record. The previous record was set on the day after Thanksgiving in 2016. In both 2017 and 2016, enough guns were potentially purchased on Black Friday to arm every active duty Marine.

Or, to put it another way, to outfit every single active duty service member in the Norwegian Army, Navy and Air Force ten times over.

Words fail me; I shall turn to music:

  1. Well Mitch;

    Here’s my assessment;

    200,000 people are in for a Merry Christmas!🎄🎁

  2. When I say the Second Amendment protects the right of citizens to overthrow a tyrannical government, Liberals sneer “What are you gun nuts going to do, fight the Marines?”

    If there are truly only 200,000 active duty Marines, that’s not going to be a problem. In fact, the entire military including National Guard and Reserve, numbers about 1.5 million, many of whom are stationed around the world, and not all of them are front-line trigger pullers because somebody has to work in Human Resources. So how many are available to go kicking down doors?

    Last year, there were 15 MILLION hunting licenses issued, every one of them, by definition, a front-line trigger puller. If only 1 in 10 of them joins The Resistance, the odds are even and no military commander wants to go even-up against a guerilla force.

    No, it wouldn’t be easy. No, I don’t want it to happen. And the Second Amendment keeps it from happening, in the way Mutually Assured Destruction kept the US and Soviets from open conflict: neither side could easily win, both sides would suffer horrendous losses, so both sides look for ways to live together rather than boldly strike at the other.

    Those 200,000 phones ringing to do background checks? That’s the sound of liberty being defended, one call at a time.

  3. Gun owners are a large minority. They are middle class, they vote, and many care more about guns than about any other political topic. It’s not about the gun industry, or even the NRA. It’s about gun owners, and the political power of a vocal minority. They are well informed about gun control issues, and choose the status quo over the alternatives. The histrionics of those who would prefer to see gun control are beside the point. Gun owners don’t need the issues explained to them. They view the societal costs of gun ownership as well worth it. Until they change, or die off, the politics will not shift.

  4. Well Emery, Pew Research Center recently published reports that 42% of households in the US possess firearms, and some 2/3 of those claim to have multiple guns. I’d say that a large minority is an understatement given that many who reported not being gun owners were open owning them at some point. Not likely that the many having guns will be handing them over in any government taking. You and I will be very long gone from this earth before any political shifts.

    I’m open to purchasing a 23’ Center Console AquaSport powered by twin Yamaha screws on the transom.

  6. Emery, hoping when you do get to purchasing the boat you won’t be subject to high luxury taxes, “May Issue” recreational boat licensing, limitations on fuel tank size, multiple engine surcharges. Justification of your need for the boat to a licensing board might be an acceptable requirement.

  7. Emery, my daughters don’t have much interest in guns, but they do remember what happened when guns were confiscated in Germany, the USSR, China, Cambodia, Uganda, the Ottoman Empire, and more. Don’t count on those votes changing much. Some of us remember what happens to disarmed people.

  8. With two kids at university, the combined four semesters/yr will overrule the boat. But one can dream… 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓
