Another Gun-Free Zone, Another Mass Shooting, And A Couple Good Guys With Guns

First things first:  Berg’s 18th Law is still in full effect;  it’s been mere hours since a man murdered 27 people at Sutherland Springs Baptist Church, near San Antonio; anything you read in the media will be crap.

One thing we do know?  Churches in Texas are “gun free zones”.  Nobody in that church was legally authorized to carry a firearm to defend themselves or their fellow parishioners.

Like nearly all mass shootings, it took place in a “gun free zone”.

Just like David Lillehaug and Nancy Nord Bence like it.

You post your property “no guns allowed?”  I’m not going there.  I’m not spending money, I’m not worshipping, I’m not saying “boo”.  I will consider them a threat to my safety.

No exceptions.

But Wait:  What’s this that the mainstream media is pretty roundly ignoring about the attack?  The shooter was himself shot by…

…an armed citizen:

Stephen Willeford managed to shoot Devin Kelley before jumping in another man’s truck and chasing him down, the Daily Mail reported.

Texas Department of Public Safety chief Freeman Martin said Willeford “grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect” after Kelley left the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, where he opened fire with an assault rifle and killed 26 people.

And just as law enforcement teaches about mass shootings these days – if you show a mass shooter any resistance, they usually break off the attack, and either give up or kill themselves.

Kelley did both:

The man who killed at least 26 people in a Baptist church in a rural Texas town on Sunday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CBS News in an interview on Monday morning.

Tackitt said gunfire was exchanged between the gunman and two armed citizens during a vehicle chase after the shootings.

The church was a gun-free zone – naturally.   But the rest of Texas was not.

UPDATE 2:  The USAF apparently neglected to report Kelley’s domestic conviction to the NICS – allowing him to buy the guns he used.

  1. From the latest (12:31 pm) from the AP story in the Strib:

The assailant was dead in his vehicle. He had three gunshot wounds — two from where the armed man hit him in the leg and the torso and the third self-inflicted wound to the head, authorities said.

  2. { impersonating eTASS – shudder }

Never mind all the lies I told, GUN-FEEE ZONE!

  3. Today my nespaper carried an op-ed from the LA Times. Its headline?
“Don’t use NYC attack to water down our freedoms.”
    http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-new-york-terror-trump-20171102-story.html
The last paragraph is “Lessening freedoms and legal protections will not make us safer. It will us prisoners of our fear.”
Read it. See if you can tell what freedoms and legal protectons they are talking about, because I can’t.
It ain’t the freedom to posssess a firearm. The editors of the LA Times would confiscate every gun in private hands in the country, of they could.

  4. It must be the freedom to drive a 3/4 ton pickup, MP, don’t you think? Obviously that’s what I think of when I think of LA, freedom to drive what you want, no car pool lanes or anything to mess things up, all that. :^)

Either that, or freedom to let people in who shouldn’t be there, which is probably closer to the truth.

  5. Freedom to smoke pot to turn sheeople into mindless libturd voting drone zombies.

  6. Mitch,

How do you know that no one in the church was armed? Even if they were, how do you know it would have helped given the guy had on ballistic protection?

    Yet another RW meme’ destroyed.

  7. JPA, I’ll be happy to take any form of current affairs test vs. your dead-dumb ass any day and twice on Sundays. I’m guessing I’ll beat you by 50 points and that’s on a test with 10 questions.

Aren’t you the extremist loon who wants to just shoot people you don’t like? Yep, it’s liberal lawlessness that ruins the country for you fat old white racists.

  8. How do you know that no one in the church was armed?

    “Know?” I don’t.

But churches in Texas are statutory gun free zones with (IIRC) a misdemeanor for carrying illegally. Most people with permits don’t carry when there’s jail time at stake. Fact.

Even if they were, how do you know it would have helped given the guy had on ballistic protection?

How do I “know?” I don’t. There are no 100% guarantees. You keep acting like there are.

How do you “know” that someone with a pistol wouldn’t get a head shot? Or be able to shoot from behind? You don’t.

    Yet another RW meme’ destroyed.

What meme? “Carrying a gun guarantees your safety?” That’s not a RW meme. That’s your strawman.

Pen, in the past few hours, you’ve proven that you cannot read a simple graph, that you did not know that it hurts to be shot while wearing a vest, that you have no clue about the rightful uses of semi-auto small caliber rifles, and that you’re not aware of basic tactics for defensive pistol use. You’ve also flat out slandered gun rights activists by suggesting we’re OK with violent felons having guns.

With that record, I am going to suggest that a bit of humility about how much you know just might be in order.

  10. A vest doesn’t make you invincible. The guy outside managed to shoot the killer which forced him to drop his rifle and flee the scene.

When the shooter gets to the end of your pew, you step into the aisle nose-to-nose with him, block his rifle aside with your body, raise your snub-nose .38 up under his chin, and pull the trigger as many times as it takes to stop him from killing people.

Yes, it would require planning ahead to carry the .38 and enough guts to attack instead of fleeing, so that leaves you out, Pen. But just because you aren’t capable of fighting back doesn’t mean other people should be required to sit meekly, waiting to die.

WTF? Where did that come from, mz. incomprehension? I do not profess to know everything and anything and strive to learn each… and… every… day. And if I am wrong, I say it. Something you are not capable of. All you do is dig deeper holes to burry your bullshit.

Aren’t you the extremist loon who wants to just shoot people you don’t like? Yep, it’s liberal lawlessness that ruins the country for you fat old white racists.

WTFx2? Now you are just confirming you have a have mental disorder. Talk about unhinged. And since we have plenty of evidence on this blog that proves you to be an incoherent, lying, comprehenshion-challenged idiot, please provide one, just fucking ONE post to your assertion that I am “the extremist loon who wants to just shoot people you don’t like”. Just one. Go ahead, make my day. Punk.
