Playing Chess Against Checkers Players

Glenn Reynolds

Obama did a 6-month immigration pause on Iraq, nobody cared.  Trump does a 3-month pause on a list of countries the Obama Administration put together, and he’s literally Hitler.

And don’t forget the P.S:

Do you want more Trump? Because explosive anger mixed with sanctimony is how you get more Trump.

I’m not sure the left gets just how much smarter than them Trump seems to be.

  1. Complete media and Lefty meltdown over around 100 non-Americans temporarily delayed at an airport.
The ACLU, immigration lawyers, celebrities and journalists believe that they control American immigration policy.

  2. Whatever you may think of Trump’s policies, there is no question about the lack of competence that he and his team have shown. When people elected somebody to shake up Washington I don’t believe the intent was to put somebody in power who issues presidential orders without checking to see if it is illegal or unconstitutional. That’s not a shake up; it’s just blundering incompetence.

  3. “Whatever you may think of Trump’s policies, there is no question about the lack of competence that he and his team have shown.”
    Uh . . . no.
What specific episode of “incompetence” are you referring to, Emery?
Have you read the actual EO on visa holders? I have.

  4. A federal court made a slight adjustment to the EO, which lawyers for the winning side concede will affect maybe 200 people who already had permission to be here. The rest of it stands. Doesn’t sound too illegal to me.

  5. We’ve gone from “Trump won’t keep his promises” to “Trump keeping his promises is illegal!”

  6. EI, if you want to talk about incompetence, maybe…let’s talk about the guy who lost 13 times by a score of 9-0 in the Supreme Court, under whose watch ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood gained ascendance in the Middle East, under whose watch the relationships with Russia and China were set to “retreat”, and who created the “Health Insurance Deform Act”, now imploding under its own weight, maybe?

Seriously, getting an executive order held up in court is pretty minor compared to what we’ve endured the past eight years.

  7. Incompetence? I’m not too sure about that given that Trump is going to drop his Supreme Court nominee tomorrow. He’s gotten the Left riled up into an irrational frenzy now, so when he drops the nominee any reaction even they have can’t go past 11 and will be ignored by anyone other than the Left themselves.

Trump’s playing the Lefties and the media (PtR) to great effect. He’s turning news coverage into an echo chamber that will be ignored by everyone other than those who desired to hear nothing but mindless screeching.

  8. It goes without saying that the rule of law must prevail in whatever instance. Trump’s actions must be done under the color of law — or opposed by the courts. My guess is that the law may be against Trump but there are Americans in spirit, with him. That does not make Trump right and it does not make his immigration “policy” either right or moral. It does, however, mean we are witnessing another culture war.

  9. Everything you hear about Trump is filtered through the MSM and the bureaucracies, and the MSM and the bureaucracies working together in their war against Trump.
It’s a shame, because it makes it hard to figure out what is really going on.
This morning I heard a news item that “over 100 career state department employees” on a back channel listserv were opposed to Trump’s visa ban EO.
No details given, like how did this listserv entry make it to the press? Who put their name on it? What was the wording? When has the listserv been used to protest Clinton/Bush/Obama actions in the past? Has its authenticity been verified?
The media doesn’t talk about it, but a lot of DC journalists are married or have close relatives in the federal bureaucracies. If this kind of relationship was used to leak the listserv, I want to know about it.
The only information I have access to is the number of state department employees — there are about 24,000 of them, so “100” is about 0.24% of state department employees.

  10. Liberals started by complaining Trump’s action on refugees was unconstitutional. Shot down. Well then, it’s illegal. Nope, sorry. Now we’re hearing that just because it’s legal and popular doesn’t make it Right or Moral.

For a politician, taking an action that’s legal and popular is pretty much the definition of being Right.

And since we’re endlessly lectured against imposing morality through public policy, it doesn’t matter if this policy is immoral according to some people’s opinion.

I’m not getting tired of the winning but I am getting tired of explaining why the winning is okay. I’m about ready to adopt the Liberal model: “We won so Shut Up.” It would be so much more efficient.

  11. It’s so funny how the libidiots are wetting themselves over this when the last 3 Democrat Presidents that we had, did the same thing, Carter even went so far as to have Iranians expelled. The Blamer? He did a six month hold and according to one of my Muslim colleagues that supports Trump’s actions, Trump used the Blamer’s list of countries. Of course, there were crickets then.

By the way, he is laughing at all of the “imbeciles that are calling this a ban on Muslims”.

  12. I like to remind people that the lines “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free . . .” were written by a New York socialite, and first appeared in a fundraising letter for the Statue of Liberty in the era of Jim Crow and lynchings.
It is not official American policy. It represents a certain strain of American thought from the 1870s, when immigrants were needed to fill factories and settle the American frontier. This immigrant-welcoming strain of American thought was fiercely opposed by such undeniably American personalities as Frederick Remington and Owen Wister (author of the primal Western novel The Virginian). Remington and Wister opposed the massive immigration of the late 19th and early 20th century because they believed it was changing the nature of the United States, making it less “American,” and more “European.”
It is not “un-American” to oppose open borders and limitless immigration.

  13. Lost in all the anti-Trump hysteria is the news that to mitigate the problem of refugees being moved to other continents with foreign cultures, Trump has achieved success in getting Middle Eastern leaders to enforce ‘safe haven’ zones within the ME.
    Why didn’t Obama do this?
    Incompetence, I suppose.

  14. It goes without saying that the rule of law must prevail in whatever instance. Trump’s actions

All one has to know that eTASS is reading from this daily download of talking points is that 0bumbler did EXACTLY same thing, and for a longer period of time, and nobody, NOBODY said boo. All of a sudden it becomes illegal and incompetent. Yet again you have proved you are a hypocritical, know-nothing moron, eTASS.

  15. “Now we’re hearing that just because it’s legal and popular doesn’t make it Right or Moral.”

And for these reprobates who spent themselves defending Hillary Clinton using that exact line of argument is beyond belief.

Say SSOLSEmery, let me introduce you to the Immigration Act of 1903 (aka the Anarchist Exclusion Act)

The act added four inadmissible classes: anarchists, people with epilepsy, beggars, and importers of prostitutes.

Your family must have arrived sometime prior to that.

  16. Joe: Legal and popular doesn’t happen often. Over the past eight years, the acceptable M.O. for the Obama-noids had been to do the popular thing and then tell media it’s legal and have them report it, ad nauseum. When stupid prevails, it usually requires an injection of media approval.

  17. And when it’s clearly an illegal breach of executive duty to enforce the laws passed by the peoples’ congress, claim that since so one has standing to sue, this makes it legal.

  18. Powerline is reporting that the looney left is trying to pull Schumer even further into the fever swamp: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2017/01/civil-war-on-the-left-part-36.php
The visa suspension is popular with the public, so this ought to hurt the Dems in the midterms. I suspect that a lot of people disagree with the notion that Schumer, Obama, and a parade of foreigners and dysfunctional celebrities have a better idea of what “American values” are than they do.

  19. So while the Lefties and Media (PtR) still are having vapors over the muslim ban bait anyone else notice today’s other big story that the MSM is refusing or at least forgetting to cover.
    http://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/2017/01/30/trump-signs-executive-order-to-slash-regulations.html
It’s almost like he’s using these insane positions as bait he knows the media will take and then getting what he really wants to get done after…

  20. Schumer has just said, on the senate floor, that the administration’s position is that refugees are predominantly criminals and terrorists. Apparently Schumer learned the art of strawman construction from Obama.
