The American Civil Liberties Union is a “civil liberties” group – defending the liberties that the political class east of the Hudson and West of the Sierra Madre value, first and foremost.
Don’t get me wrong – in the great scheme of things, someone has to defend the First Amendment rights of Nazis to march in Skokie, or for artists to create statues of the Virgin Mary made of cow dung. And it’s not going to be me – not beyond the intellectual plane with any great vigor, anyway.
Of course, the ACLU has always believed the Second Amendment was a collective right – incomprehensibly believing that while rights “of the People” in the First Amendment refer to individuals, in the Second they attach to the National Guard.
But once in a while they get one right – as in the report earlier this week on the excessive militarization of the Police.
Hooray for the liberals!
Talk about being the last ones on board. Militarization of local police has been an issue of the center and right, for what, twenty plus years? Good to see Lefty’s ‘concerned’ that innocent people get killed/maimed/terrorized by heavily armed local police – of course they had to go anti-Dr Martin Luther King Jr on the bit by noting the skin color of the people terrorized, but hey, that’s todays Left. Skin color is always more important than content.

But DG – yes, indeed, yay for “liberals”, at least in the classic sense of the term; people who believe that government serves the people, not the other way around.
That’s as distinct from “progressives”, who figure that sometimes government needs a little extra “oomph” to take care of everyone. “Progressives” aren’t necessarily “liberals” – in fact, they’re getting less so every day.
PS: Don’t forget about the Lefty’s “SWATTING” Conservative commentators / bloggers Erick Erickson (Red State) and Patrick Frey (Patterico) in the hopes these people might be killed in all the confusion of a SWAT Team raid on their homes based on a ‘prank’ phone call to the cops.
I hope someone got thrown in jail over that.
I’ve been warning people about this for years.
While conservatives have been remarkably quick to set aside their traditional pro-LE sentiments when faced with facts like Duluth PD getting an MRAP (or pictures of me and my friends being held at genuine, fully auto assault rifle point during a “traffic stop”), the stinking lefties could have cared less until they realized it was their base that was bearing the brunt of the para-military force our PD’s have become.

This has direct links to the IRS gang we’re dealing with today, too. Right now, lefties are sniggering, because the Light Worker is in the big chair and he’s putting it to real Americans. They are too ignorant to realize the worm turns.
I admit that watching coppers beat down lefties during the ’08 convention in St. Paul was enjoyable for a minute, but it pissed me off right away. I posted pictures and a highly critical opinion on my now defunct blog, because I realize that they would just as quickly beat my, or your, family down.
There will come a time when the Big Government they created turns the IRS gang loose on the left. Oh sure, I may wait until the Scary Smert, Reality Based Community is forced to squirm on the pavement a bit, maybe lose a house or two, but then I’ll be just as vocally against BGT (Big Gov Thugs) as I am today.
