Consequences

Illinois, which jacked up taxes (making Mark Dayton all green with envy) last January, has seen its unemployment rate rise...:

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July.

I tweeted about this last night.  Someone said “but what about as a percent of population!”, they responded with a rhetorical smirk.

Premature, naturally (emphasis added):

The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover. But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year. Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline.

And for states that reduce taxes?

Well, what do you think?

  1. Taxing the wealthy is an article of faith for progs. You might as well tell a fundamentalist Christian that Jesus was not the son of God. There is plenty of empirical evidence that millionaire taxes do the exact opposite of what they are supposed to and harm people of low income, but that just won’t fly as an idea.

  2. The scary part is that their entitled population, dominated by union crooks, won’t ever change it. Even more scary? They are moving here!

  3. I’d be interested to see how many are collecting “benefits” in bot Minnesota and Illinois. But the point is this is a textbook example of how not to stimulate an economy. Obama learned his trade in Chicago. Is it a surprise that he’s getting the same results on a national level?

  4. Kermit;

    You can probably conduct your own “unscientific” research. Just drive past any places that rent mailboxes on the day the welfare checks arrive and count all of the out of state plates, especially from IL! I have friends that have followed some of these cars out of MN as they headed back to IL on I-94.

  5. The governors and legislators of states like Indiana are not addressing the broad needs of the US. Instead they are focusing on the narrow needs of the people that elected them and to whom they are accountable. This is one more “failure of Federalism” that needs to be investigated by AG Holder.

  6. Just as soon as Eric gets done investigating Standard & Poors for not lining up like they were told to.
