Buying The Presidency

Barack Obama meets with George Soros
, hoping to tap into some of the magic the government-toppling currency speculator has brought tot he world of leftyblogs:

Senator Barack Obama treaded onto Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s home turf last night to meet with prominent Democratic donors and feel out those who might prefer the sound of President Obama to President Clinton (as in Hillary, not Bill).

Amid intensifying presidential musings by Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama met with George Soros, the liberal billionaire philanthropist, and then some other donors last night at Mr. Soros’s offices…Mr. Soros, an early supporter, was the host of a fund-raiser during Mr. Obama’s campaign for the Senate in 2004, but he has not publicly committed to any candidate for the 2008 race, said Michael Vachon, an aide to Mr. Soros.

Maybe Soros will undercut the dollar in ’08 to get a Democrat into office.

  1. Maybe Obama will establish a tiered system for donors. He could call the top donors something like Rangers or Pioneers and then he could give cabinet positions to some of the top donors.

  2. Speaking of buying votes . . .

Before the election, Bush’s oil buddies lowered the price of gas down to $2.19 a gallon to help the Republicans get elected. I know it’s so – I read it on the internet.

Boy, are those oil guys dumb. The elections are over and the Republicans got shellacked but gas is STILL $2.19 a gallon. Why haven’t they raised prices up again?

It’s almost as if there was no conspiracy at all; as if gas prices responded to invisible and inexorable market forces; as if DFLers were lying to me.

    Naaaaah.

    .

  3. And isn’t it interesting that during the 2000 elections, then Governor Bush bragged – even made it a campaign issue that America should elect him because he would be able to “jawbone” the Saudis into lowering oil prices.

But now when we are raising the possibility that Bush may be using his connections and influence to affect oil prices, we’re the crazies…

So which is it guys? Was Bush lying then or is he lying now? I mean really, If you tell me you have the power and the ability to do something, don’t get all pissy with because I comment about you doing it.

And for the record nate, I paid $2.01 a gallon the day before the elections and $2.22 this morning. That would be around a 9% increase in a month.

  4. So…

The concern: Campaign financing and the undue influence of wealthy individuals and organizations on our political leadership.

I feel there’s a problem, but I’m having a really hard time seeing what the appropriate solution is. So many aspects of “campaign finance reform” seem to tread a bit heavily on the Bill of Rights from what I can tell.

So, does anyone in this crowd have any suggestions as to what – if anything – we should do about it?
