The Answer Is Obvious

Under New York state law and city ordinance, if a Muslim group buys property in lower Manhattan, and builds a mosque subject to city building codes and zoning regulations, a principled property-rights advocate should say “they have the right to do it” – even if the entire project is a thumb in the eye of the victims and the city that suffered so much on 9/11.

But I should also think it’d be perfectly legal for someone to buy some property near the mosque and build – subject to codes and zoning, naturally – a statue.  Of, say, Mohammed.

Maybe 110 stories tall.

UPDATE: This is, of course, satire.

Maybe the mosque builders would get the point then.

  2. Some are saying, and I think they are serious, of opening a gay bar next door to the mosque. As a way to bridge the gap between Islam and the gay community.

  3. That would be Greg Gutfeld, and it’s sheer genius. I say put a Victoria’s Secret store on the other side.

  4. That’d be Greg Gutfield of “The Redeye”. It started tongue in cheek, but it’s picked up some momentum.

The zoning’ll kill it, so it wont’ matter even if they do try.

  5. Next on the it’s perfectly legal and totally thoughtless agenda… A new KKK Museum and Interpretive Center across the street from the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

  6. Night Writer Says: “What about opening up a Bubba’s House o’Bacon next door? Oh wait, I think Bloomberg already outlawed those.”

I like the concept; maybe a street vedor offering bacon or porkchop on a stick, or maybe pickled pigs feet (on a stick of course)! Chitlins on a stick might be a little difficult to pull off.

  7. I liked the gay bar idea, but even though its satire Mitch, I like the idea of a statue even more. Ok everyone, more ideas! The bacon stuff is good but lets come up with some more!

  8. Imagine, if you will, an American cultural center, complete with a chapel, being built two blocks from ground zero in Nagasaki or Hiroshima Japan. Would the Japanese people welcome this as a sign of love and understanding between our two peoples? I suggest there would be a storm of protest about the insensitivity of the American people. And it would be right to not approve the building of such a center, chapel notwithstanding.
There are far better ways to build bridges between adversaries. For starters, how about protecting the rights of Christian minorities in Muslim countries? Cordoba House is a very obvious thumb in the eye of America.

The Cordoba House motif has two very different sides: the one cited by its supporters is the belief that Christians, Jews and Muslims lived in harmony once upon a time in Cordoba, Spain. On the dark side, the term also refers to a mosque built on top of a church during a period of Islamic domination. Older readers may recall the TV series “The Outer Limits” episode in which visitors from outer space bring a book titled “To Serve Mankind.” The main character makes an unpleasant discovery when he turns the pages and discovers it’s a cookbook.

  9. Some of the names for the Gutfield Gay-Muslim themed bar over at the Red-Eye site are funny (and NSFW). Alluh Ak-BAR is my current fave.

  10. You should build your statue, Mitch. Maybe not 110 stories tall, but a nice life-sized statue would be a good fit. Right across the street, maybe?

In line with the pork thing, there’s a popular Somali coffee shop on Nicollet Av two buildings down from Market BBQ, which has a big sign with a pig in a chef’s hat on it. I find that amusing. There was a Somali restaurant right next door, but it didn’t last long. Probably because of the smoking ban.

Ben, is it a Simpsons reference?

  11. You should build your statue, Mitch.

Nah. It was satire. I have no personal interest in profaning other peoples’ faiths.

I look forward to the day when Christian, Jew, Moslem, Hindu and Buddhist can join together in our common interest; pelting atheists with rocks and garbage.

  12. You should build your statue, Mitch.
Yes. Fondling a 9 year old girl. Authenticity is important.

    IALTO!
