{"id":907,"date":"2007-06-11T05:21:07","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T11:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/06\/11\/cue-ms-morissette\/"},"modified":"2007-06-11T05:21:07","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T11:21:07","slug":"cue-ms-morissette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=907","title":{"rendered":"Cue Ms. Morissette"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Saint Paul DFL had its City Convention on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The usual pack of clowns <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnblue.com\/node\/480?PHPSESSID=c9831e0fc84d088a00f098eb8cf94006\">got the nod<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"content\">Incumbent Saint Paul School Board members <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annecarroll.org\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Anne Carroll<\/font><\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/kazouakongthao.org\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Kazoua Kong-Thao<\/font><\/strong><\/a> along with newcomers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardy4education.org\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Keith Hardy<\/font><\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/kevinforschoolboard.com\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Kevin Riach<\/font><\/strong><\/a> were endorsed by acclimation at today&#8217;s Saint Paul DFL city convention.<\/p>\n<p>No opposition was expected and they were the only nominated candidates. Congratulations to all four &#8230; the real campaign for St. Paul school begins now. As a united front, they have a great chance of dislodging Republican&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;I presuming they&#8217;re talking about Republican Tom Conlon, the sole non-DFL member of the board, the body&#8217;s sole source of any form of diversity, and the only sitting Republican office-holder in any city-wide office in Saint Paul.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have to come back to that later.<\/p>\n<p>Some parts of the DFL are also gamboling about like jabbering lemurs over Instant Runoff Voting, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnblue.com\/saintpaul_dfl_endorses_irv?PHPSESSID=c9831e0fc84d088a00f098eb8cf94006\">which was endorsed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Saint Paul DFL Party endorsed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterballotcampaign.org\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Better Ballot Campaign<\/font><\/strong><\/a> on the 2nd ballot today at the city convention. The Better Ballot Campaign is working to put <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IRV\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Instant Runoff Voting<\/font><\/strong><\/a> (IRV)on the ballot in November. Voters would then choose whether or not to have city municipal elections for Mayor and Council using IRV.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An emailer on a Saint Paul Issues discusssion group, however, noted the irony of the vote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Excuse me if I am the only person who finds this extremely ironic that<br \/>\nthe\u00a0 advocates for Instant Runoff Voting made it so that it was the only<br \/>\nissue\u00a0 position that got two chances to reach the 60% needed to be supported by the\u00a0 party?\u00a0 Get it?\u00a0 These are the people who think you should only vote\u00a0 once in any election cycle and wanted two votes on getting party support!\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All humor aside, it was an interesting look into the way the DFL runs things in\u00a0Saint Paul in general (I add some emphasis):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The rules allowed the advocates of IRV to make a presentation of\u00a0 their position lasting fifteen minutes (<em>only those for IRV<\/em>); then there was a\u00a0 question and answer period where the answers were given by the advocates of IRV\u00a0 (one was really funny, someone asked about the concerns that the head of Ramsey\u00a0 County Elections had raised about IRV and if they would explain them to the\u00a0 group &#8230; the response was, &#8220;well everyone is entitled to their<br \/>\nopinion&#8221; and on\u00a0 they went to the next question); during the entire Q and A their was a continual\u00a0 run of the Pro position being run on the big screen to the group; then after 25\u00a0 minutes of presenting one side of the issue, both sides got five speakers, one\u00a0 minute each.\u00a0 They had made sure that there was no way to discuss all of\u00a0 the problems that IRV would cause.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t get much across in one minute\u00a0 and barely can touch on the issue.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And after all that?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, with that IRV didn&#8217;t reach the 60% needed for endorsement and they<br \/>\nhad\u00a0 to use the extra special second vote that only IRV was allowed and then<br \/>\nthey won\u00a0 by two votes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Expect the DFL and the Strib (pardon the redundancy) to pull out all the stops to push IRV in Saint Paul and, since this is a DFL campaign, vilify all opponents without restraint.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"content\">The Saint Paul DFL Party endorsed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterballotcampaign.org\/\"><strong><font color=\"#3399cc\">Better Ballot Campaign<\/font><\/strong><\/a> on the 2nd ballot today at the city convention. Exact numbers are at the very bottom of the post.<\/p>\n<p>IRV ballot measure missed the 60% endorsement threshold by <strong>2<\/strong> votes on the first ballot and then won by 2 on the second! Surprisingly, it appears that only 1 delegate left between the first and second ballots. Over here in Minneapolis, we&#8217;re used to higher rates of disappearing delegates.
