{"id":9019,"date":"2010-03-03T08:16:30","date_gmt":"2010-03-03T13:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=9019"},"modified":"2010-03-03T08:16:30","modified_gmt":"2010-03-03T13:16:30","slug":"good-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=9019","title":{"rendered":"Good Sign?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a non-lawyer, trying to figure out what the SCOTUS justices are <em>really <\/em>saying when they talk is a little like the Oracle of Delphi trying to predict the next day&#8217;s action at Canterbury.\u00a0 Lots of figurative sheep entrails and the like.<\/p>\n<p>But in yesterday&#8217;s hearing for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/2010\/03\/03\/2010-03-03_justices_taking_aim_at_gun_ban.html\">S <em>McDonald V. Chicago<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>this bit here sounded modestly encouraging to this mere layman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In oral arguments Tuesday, the justices signaled they are ready to pivot off a 2008 case, which overturned the handgun ban in the federal enclave of Washington and extend the right to &#8220;keep and bear arms&#8221; to states and localities.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, considered the swing vote on the nine-member court, observed that the right to possess a gun has a &#8220;fundamental character&#8221; akin to freedom of speech.
