{"id":88594,"date":"2024-10-29T10:02:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=88594"},"modified":"2024-10-29T11:18:15","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T16:18:15","slug":"slip-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=88594","title":{"rendered":"Slip"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As a good American of rural Scandinavian\/Scottish descent, I&#8217;m rarely given to sharing optimism publicly.&nbsp; It&#8217;s just not in the DNA.<\/p>\n<p>And, as always, I&#8217;m a Trump skeptic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The race could still swing either way; there&#8217;s a week left for October Surprises (although have of them, mathematically, would be November surprises). <\/p>\n<p>But over the weekend, the Real Clear Politics average finally showed Trump up in their polling average.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The margin is well within the margin of error &#8211; like, in the margin of error&#8217;s upper GI tract.&nbsp; But this is the first lead of any kind Trump has had in the RCP average since Harris&#8217;s &#8220;surge&#8221; after defenestrating the Potato.&nbsp; And if it holds until Election Day, it&#8217;ll be the first time Trump has ever led the RCP average at election time &#8211; 2016, 2020 or this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I never bought the &#8220;Red Wave&#8221; hype in 2022, and I&#8217;m not getting on board any bandwagons this year either.&nbsp; But I think two, maybe three, stories over the weekend got me thinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lifeboats<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VIrginia hasn&#8217;t gone Republican, IIRC, since the &#8217;84 landlside.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/QuantusInsights\/status\/1849851846623641707\"> <\/a>But as Strommie points out, <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/david-strom\/2024\/10\/26\/now-its-virginia-that-may-be-competive-n3796316\">this isn&#8217;t your father&#8217;s VIrginia<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 NEW 2024 Virginia GENERAL ELECTION POLL: QUANTUS INSIGHTS \ud83d\udea8<br><br>\ud83d\udd35 Harris: 49%<br>\ud83d\udd34 Trump: 48%<br>\ud83d\udfe1 Other: 3%<br><br>725 LV | Oct 22-24 | MoE 3.6%<br>Sponsored by: Trending Politics News<br><br>Cross tabs and full report at 2pm CST. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5jsSo8doUT\">pic.twitter.com\/5jsSo8doUT<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Quantus Insights (@QuantusInsights) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuantusInsights\/status\/1849851846623641707?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris is still up, but the change in momentum is pretty clear.  If Harris is going to have to fight to defend Virginia, that could make for a very long election night for her, and a much shorter one for me.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-Inflicted<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the weekend, NBC News started to rip off the bandaid &#8211; Arab-Americans in MIchigan are&#8230;not very warm to Harris:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>[Michigan state represetnative Abanas] Farhat said the Democratic Party \u201chas missed several key opportunities\u201d to reassure Arab American voters concerned about Gaza. One glaring oversight, he said, is the ongoing decision to supply Israel with weapons for its military campaign in the enclave. He also points to how the Democratic National Convention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/uncommitted-delegates-get-no-request-palestinian-convention-speaker-rcna167443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not allow a Palestinian American affected by the war<\/a> to speak, despite giving a platform to the parents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/parents-hamas-hostage-plead-release-democratic-convention-rcna167673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hersh Goldberg-Polin<\/a>, a slain Israeli American who was abducted by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time for listening \u2014 we\u2019re beyond that now,\u201d Farhat said. \u201cWe\u2019re in a phase where constituencies like mine are demanding action in the form of policy change, not just rhetoric change, but in seeing a party that for years this community has been loyal to, standing up for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;d be reasonable to read the NBC piece and conclude that <em>Harris could lose <\/em>Michigan&#8217;s Arabs &#8211; and, possibly, Michigan itself &#8211; rather than Trump winning it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But events over the weekend showed us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/politics\/2024\/10\/muslim-and-arab-leaders-take-the-stage-to-endorse-trump-at-michigan-rally.html?outputType=amp\">it might not be quite that simple<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>At the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave., a group of Muslim imams from the Michigan Chapter of the Arab American Bar Association took the stage to endorse Trump, expressing their support for his stance on ending the wars in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"H5SXP6WT4BA3ZAEFCT7WVS4QZY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cWe as Muslims stand with President Trump because he promises peace not war,\u201d one of the imams said. \u201cWe are supporting Donald Trump because he promised to end war in the Middle East and Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"OD3PPDAD2RFYZHA43FU4ZHPJCQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The imams voiced a shared desire for peace, emphasizing that their communities want to see an end to these wars. Joining them was the mayor of Dearborn Heights, Bill Bazzi, who also took the stage to endorse Trump.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not have that on my bingo card.&nbsp; Speaking of candidate <em>just losing <\/em>states&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Worse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember 2016?&nbsp; When Hillary only carried MInnesota by two points?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conventional wisdom was not that Trump almost won, but that Hillary almost lost; that Hillary was an unlikeable, bad candidate.<\/p>\n<p>So my question, amid the usual overheated rumors that Trump is contending in Minnesota &#8211; and I&#8217;ve asked this of a number of Republicans &#8211; is this:\u00a0 is Harris a better candidate and more likeable, presidential candidate than Killary?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a good American of rural Scandinavian\/Scottish descent, I&#8217;m rarely given to sharing optimism publicly.&nbsp; It&#8217;s just not in the DNA.
