{"id":88472,"date":"2024-10-09T11:07:23","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T16:07:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=88472"},"modified":"2024-10-09T11:07:24","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T16:07:24","slug":"when-vibes-arent-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=88472","title":{"rendered":"When Vibes Aren&#8217;t Enough"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Can Kamala Harris ride &#8220;Vibes&#8221; and &#8220;Rizz&#8221; all the way to the White House?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pessimistic as I am about the collective intelligence of half our population, I&#8217;m not always optimistic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Jim Geraghty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/the-democrats-anxiety-vibe-shift-is-here\/\">has his doubts<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Harris campaign\u2019s entire theory of the case is wrong. Reminding people about what they couldn\u2019t stand about Trump and emphasizing \u201cjoy\u201d and \u201cvibes\u201d is not sufficient to close the deal with an electorate. It completely misreads the mood of the voters, who have been coping with runaway inflation and a high cost of living for most of the past four years, who have a growing sense that no one is in charge at the border, who worry about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/09\/18\/crime-rate-law-enforcement-fbi-trump\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">genuine post-Covid rise in crime<\/a>, and who see an international scene beset by invasions, terrorism, and massacres, all presided over by a doddering old man who was hidden from the public by a staff that took Edith Wilson as a role model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/do-americans-really-want-a-politics-of-joy-a9a6a02b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This past weekend, Peggy Noonan asked the question<\/a> the Harris brain trust should have asked: Is this the right moment in American life to proclaim a new politics of \u201cjoy\u201d? \u201cDo you want to feel joyful?\u201d is the wrong question; almost all of us would prefer to be happier. The question is: Do you look around at the state of the United States and the world today \u2014 and the performance of this administration for the past four years \u2014 and feel like joy is the appropriate response?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>My semi-related theory:\u00a0 Democrats have been using Minnesota as a testbed for their approach in campaigning; running for high office on pure social media happy-vibing and platitudes, abetted by a mostly-in-the-tank media, worked well for Walz and Flanagan (and Dayton before them). <\/p>\n<p>Why wouldn&#8217;t it work for Harris?<\/p>\n<p>The answer &#8211; the fact that a few reporters, and &#8220;reporters&#8221;, didn&#8217;t get the message:\u00a0 Harris could screw up scrambled eggs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>(As noted on <a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.com\/podcast\/three-martini-lunch\/kamala-confirms-no-gaps-with-biden-finally-facing-tough-questions-gop-senate-momentum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yesterday\u2019s <em>Three Martini Lunch<\/em> podcast<\/a>, let\u2019s just take a moment to savor the irony that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/search\/?s=Sunny+Hostin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sunny Hostin<\/em><\/a> asked Harris the question that did so much damage.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Much more in the next couple of weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can Kamala Harris ride &#8220;Vibes&#8221; and &#8220;Rizz&#8221; all the way to the White House?
