{"id":87653,"date":"2024-06-03T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-03T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=87653"},"modified":"2024-06-06T09:03:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T14:03:29","slug":"found-in-the-weekend-news-dump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=87653","title":{"rendered":"#Found In The Weekend News Dump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As if ther&#8217;s not enough to talk about today already.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take a legal expert to know that the charges against State Patrol trooper Ryan Londregan were unsustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Moriarty had to spend a million bucks [1] to find that out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/hennepin-county-attorney-mary-moriarty-will-drop-murder-charges-against-state-trooper-in-shooting\/600370487\/\">we found out during the weekend news dump, she apparently did<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"LZ77UMO33RDHJC7433M4C542JY\">Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said Sunday that she will dismiss murder and manslaughter charges against state trooper Ryan Londregan in the shooting death of motorist Ricky Cobb II last summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6R252Q5VYBBFJGMSZXLCJKJHEA\">Moriarty told the Star Tribune that her unexpected decision comes in response to a prosecution expert&#8217;s new analysis of video from the scene and recent statements by Londregan&#8217;s defense attorney.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But rest assured, progressive base &#8211; it&#8217;s not because she doesn&#8217;t <em>want <\/em>to stick it to a copper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"AGAFR4UXFZAY7COLHT53INMDAE\">&#8220;We could theoretically prosecute this and just let the jury decide,&#8221; she said. &#8220;However, we ethically can&#8217;t do that because we don&#8217;t believe at this point that we can disprove that affirmative defense.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"AFUYJCLB4NDNXGZNOT6GUQMYPA\">&#8220;This is not a situation of us backing down,&#8221; Moriarty said, adding that the killing last week of Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell did not influence her decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is a situation of recognizing that, given all the barriers that are put in place in these types of cases and the new information that came up, we just can&#8217;t ethically go forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Londregan&#8217;s attorney was refreshingly un-lawyerly in his comments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about goddamn time,&#8221; [Attorney Chris] Madel said. &#8220;That&#8217;s going to be about my only on-the-record comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything Mary Moriarty touches turns to crap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost-and-hopefully-future Attorney General Jim Schultz spoke for many of us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Victory.
