{"id":868,"date":"2007-05-30T05:54:30","date_gmt":"2007-05-30T11:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/05\/30\/i-sit-corrected\/"},"modified":"2007-05-30T05:54:30","modified_gmt":"2007-05-30T11:54:30","slug":"i-sit-corrected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=868","title":{"rendered":"I Sit Corrected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/05\/25\/drinking-changes-everything\/\">wr<\/a>ote about the benefits of actually meeting people with whom you disagree, face to face.\u00a0 It tends to humanize the argument, and drag people out of the petty, stereotype based bickering that attends so much online &#8220;debate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For example I&#8217;ve met the likes of Chuck Olson, Luke Francl and Chris Dykstra from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newpatriot.org\">New Patriot<\/a>; while I disagree with all of &#8217;em on most everything, I&#8217;ve found them to be great guys and had a great time talking with &#8217;em all.\u00a0 I even met some of the giggly fratboys from MNPublius; ditto.\u00a0 Nice kids; they&#8217;ll be smart when they grow up.<\/p>\n<p>Another example; I met &#8220;Tild&#8221;, who, like most leftybloggers, seems to write for dozens of different leftyblogs.\u00a0 She was writing for &#8220;Norwegianity&#8221;, I think, when I deduced from her writing that she was a joyless shrieking scold.\u00a0 Then I met her at Flash&#8217;s place, and found that, in person, she was not joyless.<\/p>\n<p>I <strike>stan<\/strike>d sit corrected.<\/p>\n<p>But meeting people and becoming acquainted with their arguments pays other dividends.\u00a0 For example, last month I pointed out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/05\/14\/robbing-peter-to-pay-patricia\/\">I am the foremost feminist you will ever meet<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course, much of the local Sorosphere reacted like I&#8217;d farted <strike>in church<\/strike> at a Wellstone seance, and responded with great ire in various degrees of &#8220;oh, no you&#8217;re double-dog not!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Tild <a href=\"http:\/\/tildology.com\/2007\/05\/03\/he-she-rendezvous\/\">referred<\/a> to something that Mark &#8220;Labor Goon&#8221; Gisleson put on Norwegianity that went somewhere nobody else has gone; actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwegianity.com\/index.php?itemid=1544\">using science and stuff to try to attack my claim.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m chagrinned.<\/p>\n<p>Because for all these years I thought that feminism &#8211; especially equity feminism &#8211; was about working to make sure that women, like my daughter will one day be, don&#8217;t face discrimination because of their gender, and have all the doors open to them that their merits and innate drive can kick free.<\/p>\n<p>Silly me.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about how much your blog says &#8220;She&#8221; versus &#8220;He&#8221;.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.outer-court.com\/archive\/2007-04-30-n15.html\">According to this tool<\/a>, the word &#8220;he&#8221; outnumbers the word &#8220;she&#8221; on my blog by 71% to 29%.\u00a0 Go ahead, check it out!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, since Tild is a leftyblogger, we have to assume that even <em>that <\/em>ludicrous context is mangled beyond recognition &#8211; and, as usual, our assumption is confirmed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What does this ratio tell us? If you think it reveals that e.g. a site with a higher \u201che\u201d count is primarily consisting of or appealing to a male audience, that\u2019s not true; for instance, both BlogHer.org as well as AskMen.com show a higher count for \u201cshe.\u201d Whatever correlations you might discover, they\u2019re likely not as linear.
