Something <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1833\">can <\/a><\/em>kill Shane MacGowan.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacGowan, the lead singer of the legendary Irish punk-folk band The Pogues, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/30\/entertainment\/shane-macgowan-lead-singer-of-the-pogues-dead-at-65\/?fbclid=IwAR3odl_ACC0G5SDbb5V6Kb9gFjt8MsRCABvLWKqU8SFC0iFYhzsukU2a4wk\">passed away overnight<\/a>.  He was 65, going on 110.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a Keith Richards\/Ozzy Ozbourne-level drinker, a brilliant songwriter, an irreplaceable bandleader&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;and, like most British punks of the era, full of political hot air:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe just wanted to shove music that had roots and is just generally stronger and has more real anger and emotion, down the throats of a completely pap-oriented pop audience,\u201d he told NME in 1983 as the band was getting off the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He frequently wrote about Irish culture and nationalism, as well as the experiences of the Irish diaspora \u2014 including his support of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was ashamed I didn\u2019t have the guts to join the IRA \u2014 and the Pogues was my way of overcoming that,\u201d MacGowan admitted in Julien Temple\u2019s 2020 documentary \u201cCrock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacGowan was celebrated by many of his peers as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. But he was also known for his heavy boozing, often leaving him stumbling and slurring his words at shows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Love the art, ignore the artist.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And at their best, the Pogues were one of the things that made the early-mid eighties such a blast <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what was &#8220;their best&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d start with the title cut of their 1985 classic album, <em>If I Should Fall From Grace With God<\/em>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B4v6aNjGFFk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Featuring the shreddingest Mandocello solo in rock history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been partial to this one, from the previous album, <em>Rum, Sodomy and the Lash<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Pogues - The Broad Majestic Shannon\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yuy-viF-7Yw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This one pops up on the NARN once in a while &#8211; and likely will again soon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Pogues - Turkish Song Of The Damned\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b6fFJX4OkDw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Americans who are familar with the Pogues at all know them from this, a song that is to Christmas music what <em>Die Hard <\/em>is to Christmas movies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Pogues -  Fairytale Of New York (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j9jbdgZidu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MacGowan&#8217;s been suffering healthl issues for a while now, and was reportedly wheelchair-bound since 2015.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably a decade ago, a story circulated that scientists were studying some of the most legendarily indestructible rock stars &#8211; Keith Richards, Ozzy Ozbourne, MacGowan and a few others &#8211; to try to figure out how they could survive decades of chemical abuse at a level that&#8217;d kill entire 70s funk bands or squads of Marines, and keep on going.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;d seem they found a data point. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I&#8217;ll be.
