{"id":86276,"date":"2023-10-19T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=86276"},"modified":"2023-10-19T08:58:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T13:58:04","slug":"public-is-to-art-as-it-is-to-restrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=86276","title":{"rendered":"Public Is To Art As It Is To Restrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;m informed that the National Museum of Women in the Arts has <em>re<\/em>-opened after $70,000,000 in renovations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think I missed the NMOWITA in my various sprints through the DC museum scene, but by all accounts it&#8217;s dedicated to art either created by, or created by intersectional classes favored by, entitled upper middle class white academic progressives&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2023\/10\/17\/peek-inside-the-reimagined-national-museum-of-women-in-the-arts\/\">who are nevertheless &#8220;victims&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhile the discourse has progressed since the museum was founded, gender and intersectional racial inequality remain pervasive in the art world,\u201d the museum\u2019s director, Susan Fisher Sterling, said during the preview Tuesday. According to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/letter-from-the-editors-introducing-the-2022-burns-halperin-report-2227445\" target=\"_blank\">a 2022 report,<\/a>\u00a0female-identifying artists made up only 11 percent of acquisitions at US museums between 2008 and 2020 (with Black female artists representing just .5 percent).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d like to ask Ms. Fisher Sterling to show her work &#8211; a walk through the Art Crawl and the Fringe Festival might make you think a supermajority of &#8220;artists&#8221; are women in some currenty-fashionable sense of the term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if the National Endowmen of the Arts is spending $70,000,000 to remodel a museum based on your &#8220;art&#8221;, you&#8217;re not oppressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_3603-994x663.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;perhaps the critics could &#8220;oppress&#8221; you with an honest review. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It seems appropriate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government subsidy is the death of art. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m informed that the National Museum of Women in the Arts has re-opened after $70,000,000 in renovations.
