{"id":85774,"date":"2023-10-13T06:24:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T11:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85774"},"modified":"2023-10-19T10:48:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T15:48:33","slug":"where-credit-is-due-mom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85774","title":{"rendered":"Where Credit Is Due: Epilogue"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Those of you who&#8217;ve been watching this blog for years may have figured it out &#8211; when I have a loooong anthology series, I&#8217;m often doing something other than writing every morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two anthology series at the same time &#8211; &#8220;Soundtrack&#8221; and &#8220;Where Credit Is Due?&#8221;   Unprecedented, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was.  I actually took an honest-to-God vacation.  I spent two weeks in Norway (by the time you read this, I&#8217;ll be home again).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent that time visiting relatives &#8211; in this case, the grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85762\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"85762\">Bernt Oleson Gr\u00e6sli<\/a>, who I talked about last week. In getting ready for the trip, I started thinking about all the things that go into a generation of people &#8211; decades, generations, even centuries of work, wins, defeats, triumphs, disasters and innumerable lessons and traits and legends passed down to those who follow.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a distant relative tell me I resembled my great-great-uncle (who died in 1965 at 93 years old)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"959\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-959x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86197\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-959x1024.jpg 959w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-281x300.jpg 281w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-768x820.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-1439x1536.jpg 1439w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5e6e4c84-8c19-446c-8f85-ea28310cc1ea-2388-00000117ca0165a0_file-1919x2048.jpg 1919w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 959px) 100vw, 959px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My great-grandfather&#8217;s little brother (front row, 3rd from left, his five sons, and their families, seventy years ago<\/em>.  <em>The farmhouse behind them was built in 1850, has been the setting for generations of family photos, and still stands today.  I spent a bunch of time this past week with some of the younger kids in this photo, and their children.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I got some questions answered (how did my great-grandfather get the idea to come to America), answered some questions (nobody knew what happened to his little sisters &#8211; but I did!), and had a great time thinking about <em>what is family<\/em>, and what are the motivations and influences and good times and bad times that make <em>people <\/em>who they are.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there&#8217;s more to come.
