Even so, I had some awareness of what was going on in the world &#8211; and it wasn&#8217;t great.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You didn&#8217;t need to be of voting age to know that the US and the West had been on a losing streak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vietnam. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Riots. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Terrorism &#8211; the Munich Olympics in particular.  (I also remember the Symbionese Liberation Army episode, although <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2297\">not quite as clearlly as one of my fellow Saint Paulites did<\/a>). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watergate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Yom Kippur War<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Oil Embargo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stagflation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And so I pretty keenly remember how weird it felt, seeing the news break on this story &#8211; which I&#8217;d been following as closely as I could, given that I was limited to TV and newspapers.   That unaccustomed feeling that <a href=\"https:\/\/lidblog.com\/when-the-entire-world-learned-freedom-is-worth-fighting-for\/\">the good guys won one<\/a> . <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was a kid during the Bicentennial, 47 years ago today.
