{"id":85436,"date":"2023-06-26T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85436"},"modified":"2023-06-26T11:10:32","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T16:10:32","slug":"seven-year-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85436","title":{"rendered":"Seven Year Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Minneapolis has big plans for transit, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/campaign-aims-to-persuade-minneapolis-drivers-to-leave-the-car-at-home\/600285082\/\">Minneapolitans are part of them<\/a>, whether they like it or not.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"byline\">June 24, 2023 &#8211; 2:00 PM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"sQBV4s\">In seven years, Minneapolis transportation planners want 60% of trips in the city taken on public transit, or made by biking, walking or rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ftdtQO\">The effort to achieve that ambitious goal, which is laid out in the city&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.minneapolismn.gov\/\">Transportation Action Plan<\/a>, began this month as the city partnered with marketing agency Vision Flourish to kick off the mode-shift campaign called &#8220;As You Go Minneapolis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"vUY2bV\">&#8220;We want to shift people&#8217;s behavior and thinking about how to move about the city,&#8221; said Amy Barnstorff, a transportation planner in the city&#8217;s Public Works Department.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>No word on how they plan to enforce compliance with this <em>diktat.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3614\">about this time fifteen years ago <\/a>that I was in the middle of my 11-month experiment at doing without a car.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among my conclusions from that experiment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I want to laugh when I see some of the lefties \u2013 especially the transit-oriented leftybloggers \u2013 yapping about running their lives on transit.&nbsp; I notice that not a single one of them seems to&nbsp;<em>have kids<\/em>; children are the big clinker in the \u201ctransit-oriented lifestyle\u201d.&nbsp; If you have to get kids to an after-school event, it\u2019s a major expedition; if you have to take one to urgent care, it\u2019s either miserable (hauling sick kids on the bus is a rotten feeling, although I never had to do it) or expensive (cabs in the Twin Cities are nothing to write home about).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Just to run down the hunch, I checked out the transit planner featured in the article. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sure enough, she punched all the expected tickets; her and her significant other apparently have a dog, but no children.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve yet to meet anyone who can walk that particular walk without having a car for a backup.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone prove me wrong. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minneapolis has big plans for transit, and Minneapolitans are part of them, whether they like it or not.
