No woman in the Billboard Chart era had ever had a #1 hit at anywhere near her age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so everyone &#8211; me included &#8211; was kind of gobsmacked when perhaps the greatest comeback in the history of popular music happened about this time forty years ago; 43 year old Tina Turner climbed back from R&amp;B obscurity to the top of the charts &#8211; the oldest woman to ever top the Billboard charts at the time, with a series of songs from &#8220;Private Dancer&#8221;, an album cut with a who&#8217;s who of the best sidemen in the business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What&#039;s Love Got to Do with It (2015 Remaster)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1avX1lX7gSs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dolly Parton, Shirley Bassey and Cher all had hits after age 50 &#8211; loooong after Turner did it.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The story of the intervening years was a catalog of horrors&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tina Turner&#039;s Escape From Ike Turner | The Jonathan Ross Show\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OPF9WW7pDVw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;literally the stuff of movies.
