{"id":85109,"date":"2023-05-11T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85109"},"modified":"2023-05-11T10:29:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T15:29:17","slug":"unexpectedly-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85109","title":{"rendered":"Unexpectedly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With great fanfare, Minneapolis and Saint Paul raised their minimum wages to $15 an hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now, the Minneapolis Federal Reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/metro\/2023\/05\/fed-researchers-15-minimum-wage-in-minneapolis-and-st-paul-boosted-pay-but-cost-jobs\/\">says the policy has done&#8230;well, <em>exactly <\/em>what every conservative said it would do:\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Pay is up 1% among those with jobs &#8211; but 2% fewer are employed as a direct result of the policies, and that&#8217;s just scratching the surface (emphasis added):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Many economists have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.socsci.uci.edu\/~dneumark\/neumark,salas,wascher-ilrr-14.pdf\">reached similar conclusions<\/a>\u00a0about minimum wage increases in the past. Still, the size of the impacts the researchers measured \u2014 by comparing Minneapolis and St. Paul to data culled from other Minnesota cities from 2017 through 2021 \u2014\u00a0were eye-popping, <strong>especially in low-wage industries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Minneapolis\u2019 retail sector, for example: The minimum wage increase led to <strong>28% fewer retail jobs than researchers would\u2019ve expected<\/strong> from a similar city during the same five-year period. By this comparison, <strong>Minneapolis also saw a 20% drop in hours worked and a 13% dip in aggregate worker earnings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across St. Paul\u2019s restaurant industry, the city\u2019s 2018 minimum wage hike was <strong>responsible for drying up nearly one-third of available jobs<\/strong>, the study found. In \u201climited-service\u201d (fast food) restaurants, both <strong>hours and earnings fell by more than half<\/strong> after the increase took effect.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Good, they&#8217;re mostly terrible jobs anyway&#8221; say the white progressives from the non-profit\/government\/industrial complex. They re literally spinning this as good news &#8211; or excuses for more programs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s possible that Big Left isn&#8217;t pushing these minimum wages as a way to gut opportunity for entry level workers.
