{"id":85072,"date":"2023-05-04T11:26:27","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T16:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85072"},"modified":"2023-05-04T11:26:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T16:26:27","slug":"irrelevant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=85072","title":{"rendered":"Irrelevant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Members of the House of Representatives <a href=\"https:\/\/minnesotareformer.com\/2023\/05\/04\/psst-im-taking-off-cover-for-me-wouldya\/\">routinely vote for each other<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Minnesota House\u2019s hours-long floor sessions are often mundane and monotonous, the chamber regularly half full at best. But when members get to voting on an amendment or a bill, the chamber suddenly looks as bustling as a bee hive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members press the green and red voting buttons at their desks to cast a \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d vote. But some of them aren\u2019t just recording their own vote. Many stretch, lean over and press the voting buttons for their seatmates, who are gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, a handful get out of their seats to make sure all the empty seats around them have a vote cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where are the missing members? And why are they surrendering their vote to their seatmates?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p> Which is technically a violation of the rules, but hey, rules are for peasants.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reps involved have their, er, reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>House members say voting for one another is a longstanding practice and no cause for alarm \u2014 though it\u2019s technically against the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Speaker Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, doesn\u2019t believe the practice compromises the legitimacy of the vote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter Hudson goes into the reason behind the reason:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/WalterHudson\/status\/1654115857713319937\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This &#8211; the serious work being argued out behind closed doors by the Governor, Speaker and Senate Majority leader, has been a problem since at least the early years of the Dayton regime, if not longer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pandemic made it worse; the state was in effect run by a junta, and the Legislature was of no more use than the Supreme Soviet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s something for a future, good government to fix, if we ever get one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the House of Representatives routinely vote for each other.
