{"id":8498,"date":"2010-02-05T13:00:15","date_gmt":"2010-02-05T18:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=8498"},"modified":"2010-02-06T11:42:06","modified_gmt":"2010-02-06T16:42:06","slug":"hot-gear-friday-the-paul-reed-smith-guitars-se-singlecut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=8498","title":{"rendered":"Hot Gear Friday:  The Paul Reed Smith Guitars SE Singlecut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;ve been playing guitar for a long time.\u00a0 33 years next month, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>And back when I was 14 and was just starting to play, &#8220;cheap&#8221; guitars were really, really awful.\u00a0 By &#8220;cheap&#8221;, of course, I meant the kinds of guitar you found in department stores and catalogs for under about $200.\u00a0 They had anemic electronics, terrible workmanship, necks that felt like polished telephone poles, and wouldn&#8217;t stay in tune for more than half a song.<\/p>\n<p>The advent of the global economy, computer-assisted manufacturing and mass-marketing of musical instruments has had the sort of effect that the free market was supposed to; not only can you find guitars for under $300 today that rival the quality of some of the axes that went for $600 1980 dollars thirty years ago, but it&#8217;s even dragged up the quality of some of the few remaining knockoff brand guitars you can find at Target and WalMart, which aren&#8217;t professional-quality, but aren&#8217;t embarrassments either. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8211; I&#8217;ve been playing a long time now.\u00a0 And that whole time, I&#8217;ve been playing three guitars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A mid-seventies Ibanez &#8220;Lawsuit&#8221; SG that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2371\">I wrote about a while ago<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my most recent purchase, by the way, in 1979.<\/li>\n<li>A 1960 Fender Jazz that&#8217;s been hotrodded way out of spec, and will be the subject of an upcoming HGF.\u00a0 I got it for $150 in 1978.<\/li>\n<li>A &#8220;Ventura&#8221; acoustic I bought for paper route money when I was 14.\u00a0 It was $140 in 1977, which made it kinda low-end, but it has a nice high-end tone that actually made it a decent recording guitar.\u00a0 Needs some bridgework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And so I&#8217;ve been thinking &#8211; maybe it&#8217;s time for a new toy?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m spurred somewhat by my kids.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been teaching them how to play.\u00a0 Bun plays a Yamaha acoustic that she got for Christmas two years ago.\u00a0 She&#8217;s picking it up at her own pace, and she&#8217;s not bad.<\/p>\n<p>Zam?\u00a0 He&#8217;s got mad hand-eye coordination; he&#8217;s picking it up <em>real <\/em>fast.\u00a0 I got him a guitar &#8211; a little Jackson electric, on mind-warping special at Guitar Center before Chistmas &#8211; and a Peavey amp.\u00a0 And he&#8217;s doing really good.\u00a0 He could have some talent.<\/p>\n<p>So the other day we went to Guitar Center &#8211; which, it occurred to me, was the first father-son &#8220;hobby&#8221; junket we&#8217;ve taken in many many years.<\/p>\n<p>And we both fell in love with the same instrument; a tobacco-sunburst single-cutaway beauty with <em>hot <\/em>electronics, a gorgeous, smooth action, a slick neck, a dense but comfortable body&#8230;&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the headstock.\u00a0 &#8220;Paul Reed Smith&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/prsguitars.com\/sesinglecut\/img\/front.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No <em>wonder <\/em>it played like a dream; it&#8217;s a Smith&#8221;.\u00a0 I braced for sticker shock as I reached for the price tag.\u00a0 Paul Reed Smiths are traditionally hand-made wonders that sell for well into four digits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/prsguitars.com\/sesinglecut\/img\/main1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I looked.<\/p>\n<p>Under $400.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out Smith&#8217;s new <a href=\"http:\/\/prsguitars.com\/sesinglecut\/index.html\">SE line<\/a> are factory-built guitars &#8211; and while a discerning guitarist can no doubt tell the difference between one of the hand-built high end models, the SEs are pure joy expressed in wood and wire.<\/p>\n<p>So if I get a bonus this year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Just saying.<\/p>\n<p>DISCLOSURE:\u00a0 Nobody paid me to write this.\u00a0 But they sure could.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;ve been playing guitar for a long time.\u00a0 33 years next month, in fact.
