{"id":84368,"date":"2023-02-01T08:27:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T14:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=84368"},"modified":"2023-02-01T08:28:12","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T14:28:12","slug":"whats-in-a-word-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=84368","title":{"rendered":"The Bullied Pulpit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Remember last year, in the immediate aftermath of the <em>Dobbs <\/em>decision, when Kansas referred a constitutional amendment banning abortion to a popular vote&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;and it lost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In deep-red (but for Wichita and Kansas City) Kansas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big Left took it as a bit of great news &#8211; &#8220;Even Red America is pro-choice!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smarter Americans read it this way:  America is divided on abortion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About 15% want abortion through all forty weeks, and maybe even a little after (no, <a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.yahoo.com\/_ylt=AwrEePTLc9pjyGsA.RkPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1675289676\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fslate.com%2ftechnology%2f2012%2f03%2fafter-birth-abortion-the-pro-choice-case-for-infanticide.html\/RK=2\/RS=s7Lb2RRN4uIGd7i8BEP75ulImjc-\">I&#8217;m not bveing hyperbolic<\/a>). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20-odd percent want to ban abortions completely &#8211; many with exceptions in the rare cases where the mother&#8217;s life is at risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The remainder support some form of abortion, with support sloping steadily downward from six to 20 weeks, and nearly vanishing after the halfway point in the pregnancy. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The DFL, dominated by that first 15%, has jammed down the most extreme interpretation of &#8220;choice&#8221; this side of California.  Will the people lash back from the extremes, the way they (arguably) did in Kansas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, if I have anything to do with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One group that should, doctrinally, be in the second 20% &#8211; or at least the most moderate parts of the larger 60% &#8211; is Catholics.  Of course, we know Catholics oppose abortion, because Catholics never get divorced or eat meat on Fridays, either&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;but if there was ever a time for a hypothetical archdiocese to get serious about doctrine, one might think this would be it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten Catholics in the House, and three in the Senate, voted for the &#8220;PRO Act&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"783\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file-783x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file-783x1024.jpg 783w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file-229x300.jpg 229w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file-768x1004.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file-1175x1536.jpg 1175w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/d3b1413a-1393-42bc-9bd9-f67afd7f6499-29789-00000c4396d236a2_file.jpg 1535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.yahoo.com\/_ylt=AwrCxnUFdtpj738AAzUPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1675290246\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.msn.com%2fen-us%2fnews%2fus%2fas-pelosi-denied-communion-by-bishop-what-pope-said-on-refusing-eucharist%2far-AAXyXsc\/RK=2\/RS=MwQQotJsYUghz7wcOvCvWy23HP0-\">a few Catholic bishops and priests have invoked ecclesiastical sanctions<\/a> against some &#8220;pro-choice Catholics&#8221;, so it&#8217;s not without precedent.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the question remains &#8211; is Archbishop Hebda going to do his  job, or find  some artful and obtuse grounds to evade it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember last year, in the immediate aftermath of the Dobbs decision, when Kansas referred a constitutional amendment banning abortion to a popular vote&#8230; &#8230;and it lost?
