{"id":84182,"date":"2023-01-06T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=84182"},"modified":"2023-01-06T07:07:13","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T13:07:13","slug":"unquestionably","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=84182","title":{"rendered":"Unquestionably"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/alphanews.org\/university-of-minnesota-paid-50000-to-host-1619-project-author\/\">U of M paid Nikole Hannah-Jones $50K to speak at the U<\/a> &#8211; and complied with a demand to conceal the evidence (emphasis added by me): <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hannah-Jones&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alphanews.org\/u-of-m-to-host-creator-of-the-1619-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">participated<\/a>&nbsp;in a Dec. 6 \u201cmoderated discussion\u201d as part of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/alphanews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Humphrey_School_NHJ_Countersigned-1-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a contract<\/a>\u00a0obtained by Alpha News, the university paid Hannah-Jones\u2019 agents $50,000 for her appearance on campus. <strong>The contract prohibited the university from recording the live event, which some school officials took issue with<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs the no recording item firm? I would like to remove that if possible. I am looking at one of our local news reporters for the moderator, and we\u2019ve had great success with replaying the conversation via Minnesota Public Radio when we use their hosts. This, along with providing the recording to classrooms for instruction and discussion is important to us,\u201d wrote Gail Fridlund, an events manager with the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But of course, the U acquiesced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Tom Gagnon, executive vice president of the Lavin Agency, said \u201cthat provision is firm\u201d <strong>but offered to explain the \u201cgood\u201d reasons for the recording prohibition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want folks to think she\u2019s being a diva!\u201d he said in a later email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university ultimately agreed to prohibit recording and covered the costs of Hannah-Jones\u2019 travel and lodging expenses.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Those &#8220;good reasons&#8221; are none other than you and me &#8211; taxpayers with the capacity for critical thinking.
