{"id":83972,"date":"2022-11-30T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=83972"},"modified":"2022-11-30T06:22:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T12:22:54","slug":"let-them-eat-lima-beans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=83972","title":{"rendered":"Let Them Eat Lima Beans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I can&#8217;t be the only one to have read\/seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/11\/22\/1137466569\/inflation-thanksgiving-recipes-substitutions\">this NPR piece on controlling the cost of the Thanksgiving meal<\/a> and thought it read like early-seventies <em>Pravda<\/em>, can I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article concocts &#8220;replacements&#8221; for the main components of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Turkey is by far the most expensive thing on the table. Turkey prices have risen about 50% in the last two years, largely because of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/11\/14\/1136423457\/why-turkey-prices-are-at-record-highs-for-this-thanksgiving-day\">production slowdowns<\/a>\u00a0and an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/04\/09\/1091491202\/bird-flu-2022-avian-influenza-poultry-farms\">outbreak of avian flu<\/a> [and, of course, trillions of dollars poured into the economy &#8211; a fact NPR goes to great lengths to avoid talking about.  Ed]. On average, a 16-pound bird will run you $28.96 and stuffing (prices are up about 70%) will run you $3.88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NPR Global Economics Correspondent Stacey Vanek Smith decided she would stick with meat for the main dish (many vegetarian options are cheaper), even though that&#8217;s not easy. Meat prices have risen significantly across the board: Beef, chicken, fish and even Spam are all pricey. So Stacey opted for pork. Specifically: bacon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacey&#8217;s local grocery store was selling family packs of bacon for just $4 apiece. And, of course, a little bacon goes a long way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of stuffing, Stacey sliced some tomatoes \u2014 a relative bargain that she hoped could be put to use with leftovers to create a new holiday tradition: The Thanksgiving BLT.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The worse news:  it&#8217;s not the their worst idea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They took a photo &#8211; and I swear, this is not a <em>Babylon Bee <\/em>spoof:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83973\" width=\"402\" height=\"269\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This article alone could be a <em>Casus Belli <\/em>for a second civil war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t be the only one to have read\/seen this NPR piece on controlling the cost of the Thanksgiving meal and thought it read like early-seventies Pravda, can I?
