{"id":82625,"date":"2022-06-30T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=82625"},"modified":"2022-06-30T10:54:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T15:54:01","slug":"the-most-bergs-seventh-law-op-ed-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=82625","title":{"rendered":"The Most Berg&#8217;s Seventh Law Op Ed In History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?tag=bergs-7th-law\">Berg&#8217;s Seventh Law<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;When a progressive issues a group defamation or assault on conservatives ethics, character, humanity or respect for liberty or the truth, they are at best projecting, and at worst drawing attention away from their own misdeeds&#8221; &#8211; has been getting a workout lately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this next bit &#8211; an <em>LATimes <\/em>response to last week&#8217;s <em>Bruen <\/em>decision at the Supreme Court &#8211; may be heading to the Berg&#8217;s Seventh Law Hall of Fame.  [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll let the Times own words do the talking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-06-27\/supreme-court-scotus-ruling-california-black-gun-owners\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6-1024x572.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82649\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6-1024x572.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6-300x167.png 300w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6-768x429.png 768w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6-500x279.png 500w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-6.png 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is &#8220;California&#8221; &#8220;ready&#8221;?  Well, the state&#8217;s government clearly isn&#8217;t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>California Democrats are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2022-06-23\/california-leaders-vow-to-craft-new-gun-restrictions-after-supreme-court-ruling-threatens-state-law\">scrambling to craft and enact new legislation<\/a> this week that would somehow salvage the requirement \u2014 assuming local law enforcement continues to enforce it \u2014 that residents get a permit before carrying a concealed weapon. Current law forces gun owners to show \u201cgood cause\u201d for needing such a permit, and that is now unconstitutional.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And they can&#8217;t talk about the issue without a certain amount of gaslighting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Nathan W. Jones leads the Bay Area chapter of the Black Gun Owners Assn. But until a few years ago, he wasn\u2019t even into guns&#8230;on Thursday, while many were apoplectic over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2022-06-23\/supreme-court-gun-owners-right-to-carry-a-weapon-in-public\">the Supreme Court\u2019s decision<\/a> to uphold the rights of gun owners to carry a loaded weapon in public \u2014 throwing gun control laws in California and New York into limbo at a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-05-03\/killings-in-la-on-pace-to-top-last-years-high\">shootings are increasing<\/a> \u2014 Jones was thoughtful.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>On the one hand, he wants it to be easy for law-abiding citizens to be able to defend themselves \u201cif and when the time arises.\u201d But on the other hand, he\u2019s a 50-year-old realist who knows that fear and hatred of Black people run deep in the United States, especially when we\u2019re armed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is based on&#8230;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s no overt racism when we go to the gun range, but we know how people are looking at us,\u201d Jones said of the dozens of Black members who meet up to go shooting. \u201cWe know the things that people think.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, gaslighting it is.  &#8220;We know what you&#8217;re <em>really <\/em>thinking?&#8221;  Every signficant pro-2nd-Amendment group, at the national and federal levels, have welcomed the surge in black gun owners &#8211; whatever their reasons for joining the tribe.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer, Erika D. Smith, is certainly impressively ignorant on the substance of the issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>And the other, <strong>truly weird thing<\/strong> is that race is now actually being used as an argument in support of loosening gun laws<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Justice Clarence Thomas, in his opinion for the Supreme Court\u2019s 6-3 conservative majority in the New York State Rifle &amp; Pistol Assn. vs. Bruen case, waxed philosophical about how the right to bear arms was crucial for the self-protection of Black people in the South during Reconstruction.<\/p><p>And how in 1868, Congress \u201creaffirmed that freedmen were entitled to the \u2018full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings concerning personal liberty [and] personal security &#8230; including the constitutional right to keep and bear arms.\u2019\u201d<\/p><p>Meanwhile, a <strong>coalition of progressive organizations<\/strong>, including the Black Attorneys of Legal Aid, the Bronx Defenders and Brooklyn Defender Services, filed <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21014995\/bronx-defenders-brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">an amicus brief<\/a> in the case, urging the Supreme Court to rule exactly as it did.<\/p><p>Their argument? That gun control laws in New York, like California, disproportionately harm Black and Latino people who carry guns for self-defense. They complained of clients who have been \u201cstopped, questioned, and frisked,\u201d and deprived of their livelihoods because they \u201cexercised a constitutional right.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cWe represent hundreds of indigent people whom New York criminally charges for exercising their right to keep and bear arms,\u201d they wrote. \u201cFor our clients, New York\u2019s licensing requirement renders the Second Amendment a legal fiction.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith &#8211; and the white LA progressives who edit<em> <\/em>and publish the LATimes who greenlit Smith&#8217;s piece &#8211; seem almost amazed to notice the one real thing that the gaslighting just can not deflect from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>But the governor and lawmakers could fail in their efforts, and the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling could stand. And then, <strong>California could be forced to confront a reality that has long made many self-proclaimed liberals uncomfortable: Black people \u2014 potentially a lot of us \u2014 legally carrying guns<\/strong> in public.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dig beneath the ongoing, lazy slander of all white America, and the McCarthyistic &#8220;white supremacists under every rock&#8221; rhetoric that&#8217;s become background noise in most &#8220;progressive&#8217; writing; that&#8217;s the real fear.
