Within a\u00a0few years, you may have to convince your own car you\u2019re fit to drive every time you get behind the wheel. The Biden administration\u2019s\u00a0massive infrastructure bill<\/a>, which the\u00a0House is expected to take up later this month<\/a>, includes a\u00a0provision directing the Secretary of Transportation to develop regulations that will require new cars to contain \u201cadvanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.\u201d<\/p>
The law would give regulators two to three years to develop rules mandating technology that would \u201cpassively monitor the performance of a\u00a0driver of a\u00a0motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired\u201d as well as \u201cpassively and accurately detect whether the blood alcohol concentration of a\u00a0driver of a\u00a0motor vehicle\u201d exceeds legal limits. Automakers would have a\u00a0further three years to comply, though the bill provides leeway for delay if the technology isn\u2019t up to snuff yet\u2014because the tech the bill is requiring is\u00a0still in development<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
