Alone.  Wearing masks.  Alternatively, they&#8217;ll walk their dogs.  Alone.  With masks on both parties. <\/li><li>Surf panic porn on the internet.  <\/li><li>Gossip about &#8220;deniers&#8221; of&#8230;whatever they believe. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing &#8220;Karen&#8221; has not done since, most likely, April?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read any current research on now Covid actually spreads (that isn&#8217;t vetted first by institutions that benefit from broadcasting panic porn). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/02\/24\/in-report-affirming-nearly-no-transmission-in-schools-cdc-slips-in-shocking-data-about-asymptomatic-spread\/#.YDaNeHWAhA8.twitter\">CDC study buries the lede<\/a>, notes that asymptomatic transmission is very rare, even among people with extended close personal contact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The text of the analysis is even more consequential than the CDC\u2019s reference makes it seem: \u201cEstimated mean household secondary attack rate from symptomatic index cases (18.0%; 95% CI, 14.2%-22.1%) was significantly higher than\u00a0<strong>from asymptomatic or presymptomatic index cases\u00a0<\/strong>(0.7%; 95% CI, 0%-4.9%;\u00a0P\u2009&lt;\u2009.001), although there were few studies in the latter group. These findings are consistent with other household studies<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2774102#zoi200987r28\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><sup>,<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2774102#zoi200987r70\"><sup>70<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0reporting asymptomatic index cases as having limited role in household transmission\u201d (emphasis added).<\/p><p>The 0.7 percent figure includes not just people who never show symptoms of COVID-19, but people who haven\u2019t\u00a0<em>yet\u00a0<\/em>shown symptoms\u2014two groups that have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/coronavirus-study-asymptomatic-carriers_l_5ff87c90c5b65671988527ce\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/news\/20210110\/59-percent-of-covid-cases-stem-from-asymptomatic-spread\">major factors<\/a>\u00a0driving the spread of the virus. This is a major data point often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5850256\/who-asymptomatic-spread\/\">underplayed or even challenged<\/a>\u00a0in much media coverage of the virus.<\/p><p>The key, if not central, rationale for non-pharmaceutical interventions such as masking, distancing, and staying at home is allegedly significant transmission from people who don\u2019t show symptoms. If the contagiousness of people without symptoms is\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>what drives the spread of SARS-COV-2, then no COVID restriction on public life besides staying home when you are clearly sick could be justified, considering the obvious negative consequences of these restrictions.<\/p><p>The 0.7 percent figure might even be a modest estimate of overall asymptomatic\/presymptomatic transmission because the studies were among household contacts only\u2014people who have close and extended contact with one another daily.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem especially counterintuitive &#8211; spreading a disease <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>whose primary mode of transmission is <em>airborne water droplets full of the virus ,<\/em>and <\/li><li>where <em>airborne water droplets <\/em>primary launching mechanism is the cough or sneeze, which is in fact a symptom<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;might be correlated with <em>people coughing<\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pass this along to any teachers &#8211; or at least teachers union reps &#8211; you might know .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So what&#8217; does Karen &#8211; the iconic (and unisex) cultural metaphor for the joyless, passive-aggressive scolds who pass their time hectoring others about their masks, their distancing, their attitudes about Covid in general &#8211; do with their time?
