{"id":75028,"date":"2020-08-18T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=75028"},"modified":"2020-08-16T19:49:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T00:49:38","slug":"75028","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=75028","title":{"rendered":"Science Friction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a voracious reader all my life.&nbsp; My brother can sit at the breakfast table to eat a whole bowl of cereal without reading a single word on the cereal box.&nbsp; I have no idea how he does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I never cared about the authors.&nbsp; I lived for the stories.&nbsp; The Archmage Ged, Kip Russell, Archie Goodwin, and Miss Marple were more real to me than Ursula LeGuin, Robert Heinlein, Rex Stout or Agatha Christie.&nbsp; I relied on national book awards to steer me toward the best stories: the Hugo, the Nebula.&nbsp;<\/p><p>So when the latest&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/books\/a33532809\/george-rr-martin-hugo-awards-2020-controversy-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Awards controversy erupted<\/a>, I felt left out.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t know who any of these people are, or what their race or gender or politics might be.&nbsp; And I really don&#8217;t care.&nbsp; Can they write good stories?&nbsp; Sadly, the answer appears to be No.&nbsp; If they could, they wouldn&#8217;t need affirmative action awards to make themselves feel better.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Joe Doakes<br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not a huge SciFi fan &#8211; but Joe&#8217;s premise confirms Dennis Prager&#8217;s dictum:  the left destroys everything it touches. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been a voracious reader all my life.&nbsp; My brother can sit at the breakfast table to eat a whole bowl of cereal without reading a single word on the cereal box.&nbsp; I have no idea how he does it.
