{"id":72481,"date":"2019-10-29T11:00:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T16:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=72481"},"modified":"2019-10-29T08:11:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T13:11:30","slug":"whisper-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=72481","title":{"rendered":"<strike>Reliable<\/strike> Risible Sources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Anyone remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?s=mindeman&amp;submit=Search\">Dave Mindeman<\/a>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About ten years ago or so, he ran a blog &#8211; &#8220;MNPAct&#8221; &#8211; which was a website for putative organization Dave putatively ran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let me be clear:  Dave was one of a small handful of &#8220;progressive&#8221; Metro-area bloggers from blogging&#8217;s heyday in the &#8217;00s that didn&#8217;t and, to the best of my knowledge, still doesn&#8217;t belong under police surveillance; when my garage burned down, he didn&#8217;t feel compelled to <a href=\"https:\/\/koolaidreport.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/to-ken-weiner.html\">disavow responsibility<\/a> for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there&#8217;s that.  When you&#8217;re a conservative in the metro, you become thankful for the small things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that&#8217;s not to say Dave knows how to frame an argument any better than the rest of them ever did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example &#8211; last week, Dave felt the need to post this on Twitter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Gunsense?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Gunsense<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mitchpberg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mitchpberg<\/a> &#39;s &quot;source&quot; John Lott. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9lgQmuUcUt\">https:\/\/t.co\/9lgQmuUcUt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Jeff Bezos (@Jeffbez0Susa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeffbez0Susa\/status\/1186782762403020800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 22, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Dave &#8211; confident as he seems to be in his side&#8217;s chanting points &#8211; didn&#8217;t know that Shannon Watts, like Nancy Nrd Bence (and Heather Martens before) has never, not once, said anything about guns, gun laws, gun owners, gun crime or gun statistics that&#8217;s simultaneously original, substantial and true;  Lott&#8217;s  &#8220;recent&#8221; testimony was 16 years ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I responded, natch &#8211; knowing, all along, I&#8217;d regret it, but such is the life of the contrarian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It drew a &#8220;response&#8221; from Mindeman &#8211; one that was pretty clearly the fruits of a quick google for &#8220;John Lott Sucks&#8221; or some other &#8220;Dog Gone&#8221;-caliber thrashing about.  Dave came up with&#8230;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"qme\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/p2EDi3zbrB\">https:\/\/t.co\/p2EDi3zbrB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Jeff Bezos (@Jeffbez0Susa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeffbez0Susa\/status\/1186972552545083394?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 23, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mother Jones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if you are of a certain age, you might remember when MoJo was known for some capable journalism, even if it was always hard-left.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the once-fabled counterculture investigative publication has fallen on risibly hard times; <em>Babylon Bee <\/em>doesn&#8217;t even bother parodying them anymore.  What would be the point?  (Interesting to see, by the way, that <em>MoJo&#8217;s <\/em>current &#8220;CEO&#8221; is  <em>City Pages <\/em>hanger-on Monika Bauerlein).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/02\/the-guy-behind-the-bogus-immigration-report-has-a-long-history-of-terrible-and-misleading-research\/\">The article<\/a> &#8211; by &#8220;Writing Fellow&#8221; (read:  glorified intern who&#8217;s hoping not to have to look for a job at Buzzfeed next) Gloria Exstrum, covers research Lott did on abortion and immigration, in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2015\/06\/comparing-death-rates-from-mass-public-shootings-in-the-us-and-europe\/\">his usual gun research<\/a>.  I can&#8217;t comment on the abortion and immigration stuff &#8211; I cover my zone &#8211; but once it turns to the gun stuff, Exstrum&#8217;s article is proof that you never, ever use MoJo as a source on anything Second Amendment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exstrum writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Following the 2015&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2015\/12\/planned-parenthood-shooting-colorado-springs-abortion\/\">shooting<\/a>&nbsp;at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado, President Barack Obama&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/1512\/01\/nday.06.html\">and<\/a>&nbsp;former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/floor-action\/245828-reid-seeks-expanded-background-checks\">urged<\/a>&nbsp;Congress to pass gun control legislation. \u201cI say this every time we\u2019ve got one of these mass shootings,\u201d Obama said in a statement after the incident, \u201cthis just doesn\u2019t happen in other countries.\u201d<br>In a 2015&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2015\/06\/comparing-death-rates-from-mass-public-shootings-in-the-us-and-europe\/\">post<\/a>&nbsp;on theCrime Prevention Research Center website, Lott\u2019s group argues that \u201cthis claim is simply not true.\u201dThe analysis points out that, during the Obama administration,&nbsp;the United States ranks below several European countries in death rate per million people from mass public shootings. Predictably, conservative media outlets&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americas1stfreedom.org\/articles\/2017\/2\/23\/john-lott-qa-antigun-lies-about-mass-shootings\/\">picked up<\/a>&nbsp;the story, and Lott wrote a column for Fox News&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2017\/10\/02\/gun-control-in-europe-is-almost-total-it-hasnt-stopped-mass-shooting-attacks-like-las-vegas.html\">referencing<\/a>&nbsp;his findings after the Las Vegas shooting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So far so good.  She got the basic assertions right &#8211; which is  not something you can take for granted these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&#8217;s a challenge:  try to figure out what the esteemed &#8220;writing fellow&#8221; is saying in response to Lott in this next bit.  Honestly, I&#8217;m sort of at a loss, here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>However,&nbsp;as a Media Matters for America&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/blog\/2017\/10\/03\/discredited-gun-researcher-john-lott-s-misleading-las-vegas-massacre-claims-are-falling-apart\/218120\">analysis<\/a><em>&nbsp;points out, Lott\u2019s claims only focus on public mass shootings involving machine guns, a criteria which excludes deadly incidents like the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre and the Pulse nightclub shooting.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For a &#8220;writing fellow&#8221;, Ms. Exstrum is either a terrible researcher, a lousy reporter (evidence toward this: using &#8220;Media Matters&#8221; as a source), a substandard writer, or &#8211; who knows? &#8211; maybe any 2-3 of the above.   Whatever it is, I have read this sentence a dozen times, and I can&#8217;t figure out what she&#8217;s trying to say. But I&#8217;ll give it a try, here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is she saying Lott excluded mass shootings involving machine guns<\/strong>?&nbsp; &nbsp;Well, yeah &#8211; there&#8217;s never been mass shooting by a legally-owned&nbsp;<em>machine gun &#8211;<\/em> meaning &#8220;fully automatic weapon&#8221; &#8211; in US history, at least not since the 1934 National Firearms Act (shaddap about the Valentine&#8217;s Day Massacre).&nbsp; Lott &#8220;excluded&#8221; them because&nbsp;<em>history&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>fact&nbsp;<\/em>&#8220;excluded&#8221; them.&nbsp; They don&#8217;t exist in the past 85 years, to say nothing of the six year time frame of the study Ms. Exstrum is yapping about.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is she saying that the\u00a0<em>overseas\u00a0<\/em>shootings used &#8220;machine guns&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; well, no, the raw data points out that non-US mass shootings used a variety of firearms &#8211; the vast majority of them subject to stringent gun control, by the way, which would tend to reinforce Lott&#8217;s point, not Exstrum&#8217;s.\u00a0 \u00a0The list below includes incidents with &#8220;machine guns&#8221; (notably the 11\/13 Paris massacre, carried out with military-grade AK47s &#8211; which are as illegal in France as they are here) , semi-automatic weapons, even manual repeaters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-01-at-Wednesday-November-1-12.30-AM.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is the dispositive point that Lott focuses on foreign &#8220;public&#8221; &#8220;mass shootings?&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; It makes no sense &#8211; Lott&#8217;s list of shootings in the US from 2009-2015 includes all sorts of locations &#8211; almost all public, mostly &#8220;gun-free zones&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/US-MPS-2009-through-2015.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LIterally, there is no way to read &#8220;writing fellow&#8221; Exstrum&#8217;s sentence that makes it jibe with the facts.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m open to suggestions, here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exstrum also wrote &#8211; sort of &#8211; about Lott&#8217;s foray into police-on-black-citizen shootings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In a 2016&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2870189\">study<\/a>, Lott and co-author Carlisle Moody, a professor at the College of William &amp; Mary and a member of the Crime Prevention Research Center\u2019s academic advisory board, argue that white police officers do not unfairly discriminate against black suspects. In a Fox News op-ed about the study, Lott says, \u201cMany people incorrectly believe the police are racist.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To which she adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Of course,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2016\/07\/11\/arent-more-white-people-than-black-people-killed-by-police-yes-but-no\/?utm_term=.46cf7aef142e\">ample<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/xwvv3a\/shot-by-cops\">research<\/a>&nbsp;has concluded that black suspects are much more likely to be shot by police than white ones.&nbsp;But the study nonetheless received coverage from the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/442369\/racial-bias-study-shows-white-cops-dont-target-black-suspects\">National Review<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/11\/26\/study-black-officers-more-likely-than-white-officers-to-shoot-suspects\/\"><em>Breitbart<\/em><\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/m.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2016\/dec\/26\/black-suspects-more-likely-to-be-shot-by-black-cop\/\"><em>Washington Times<\/em><\/a>, with&nbsp;<em>Breitbart<\/em>&nbsp;saying Lott\u2019s research \u201cruns against the claims of groups like Black Lives Matter.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;Ample research&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0Is anyone but me seeing a google search for &#8220;shooting black people consensus&#8221; as Ms. Exstrum&#8217;s &#8220;research&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there&#8217;s ample research on the other side as well &#8211; including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/12\/upshot\/surprising-new-evidence-shows-bias-in-police-use-of-force-but-not-in-shootings.html\">this one<\/a>, by Harvard professor Roland Fryor &#8211; that confirms at least the broad outline of Lott&#8217;s conclusion.\u00a0 Fryer happens to be black, and also happened to have started his research believing he&#8217;s find the opposite conclusion &#8211; so this finding,\u00a0<em>against interest<\/em> (where &#8220;interest&#8221; &lt;&gt; intellectual honesty).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong>\u00a0 Er, don&#8217;t start a land war in Asia, and don&#8217;t use MoJo as a source against someone who&#8217;s been paying attention?\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone remember Dave Mindeman?
