{"id":71703,"date":"2019-07-08T07:45:36","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T12:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=71703"},"modified":"2019-07-08T07:45:36","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T12:45:36","slug":"our-not-so-bright-critical-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=71703","title":{"rendered":"Our Not-So-Bright Critical Class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The daughter of Amy &#8220;Tiger Mom&#8221; Chua  (who we last encountered in this space <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=19151\">eight years ago<\/a>) is going to be clerking for Justice Kavanaugh&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;after she said she wouldn&#8217;t be&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;after her Mom praised Kavanaugh &#8211; apparently accurately.  I&#8217;ll be adding emphsis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is where our story today picks up.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Chua, [a Yale law professor and the author of the book &#8220;Tiger Mom&#8221;, a manifesto for ruthlessly deliberate parenting] who serves on the school\u2019s clerkship committee, wrote that her daughter had accepted an appellate clerkship from Kavanaugh, but that she would find a different judge to clerk with if his nomination was successful.<br>She also described Kavanaugh as a \u201cmentor to women.\u201d<br>The op-ed drew severe criticism, with <strong>many arguing that she wrote it aiming to guarantee her daughter a Supreme Court clerkship<\/strong>.<br><br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Brief aside:  using &#8220;many&#8221; as a source is becoming my journalistic pet peeve.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But let&#8217;s go one step beyond.   Would a woman who wrote an entire book on parenting, which included parenting tips such as&#8230;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8230;a total ban on TV-watching, play dates and sleepovers. Chua wrote of how when Lulu was 4, she rejected her daughter\u2019s homemade birthday card for looking sloppy.<br>Lulu was ordered to practice the violin six hours a day, and both girls were required to play the piano flawlessly \u2014 or Chua would threaten to burn their stuffed animals. The merest hint of failure was met with name-calling: Sophia was \u201cgarbage,\u201d Lulu a \u201cdisgrace as a daughter.\u201d<br><br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;bat an eye at brown-nosing a SCOTUS nominee?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear &#8220;Many&#8221;:   Your promotion from Captain to Major Obvious is granted.
