I’ve never been a yuge Pink Floyd fan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you had to pick a guitar player whose style is probably most like mine, it’s probably David Gilmour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Gilmour is selling off most of his guitar collection for charity<\/a>, including some seriously iconic pieces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The instruments that will be on the auction block at Christie\u2019s New York headquarters this June include many of his signature instruments. He\u2019ll be selling the Black Strat \u2014 a guitar he played on \u201cMoney,\u201d \u201cShine On You Crazy Diamond\u201d and \u201cComfortably Numb\u201d and enough other songs that it has amassed a legacy\u00a0worthy of its own book<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as well as his Stratocaster with the serial number 0001, the 12-string he wrote \u201cWish You Were Here\u201d on and the Ovation six-string he\u2019s played \u201cComfortably Numb\u201d on at almost every live performance he\u2019s done.

\u201cThese guitars have been very good to me,\u201d he tells\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em>\u00a0on a phone call from his home in England. \u201cThey\u2019re my friends. They have given me lots of music. I just think it\u2019s time that they went off and served someone else. I have had my time with them. And of course the money that they will raise will do an enormous amount of good in the world, and that is my intention.\u201d

It\u2019s very hard to talk about the writing process and how I record and use little snippets. Sometimes I\u2019m hearing a piece of music as it\u2019s playing on the radio or on television, and I record 10 seconds of it, just for a little particular thing and rhythm or something attracts me. I will go back to that little moment to say, \u201cWhat was it about this that attracted me and what can I \u2026 not steal, but pay homage to or extract a feeling from it.\u201d Most of [the ideas] are things strummed on acoustic guitar or plunked on a piano. Ninety percent of them, I will not understand why on earth I jotted them down and recorded them, but I have several hundred of them. I\u2019ll find something good in there.
