{"id":6822,"date":"2009-12-02T08:29:23","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T13:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=6822"},"modified":"2009-12-02T12:01:16","modified_gmt":"2009-12-02T17:01:16","slug":"all-in-the-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=6822","title":{"rendered":"All In The Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5j1bBjr_tTTXaVRXckza_PUyGPfEwD9CAMV900\">h compares Iraq, before and after the war<\/a>, with perhaps some surprising results:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U.S. TROOP LEVELS:<\/p>\n<p>_October 2007: 170,000 at peak of troop buildup.<\/p>\n<p>_Nov. 30, 2009: 115,000.<\/p>\n<p>CASUALTIES:<\/p>\n<p>_Confirmed U.S. military deaths as of Dec. 1, 2009: at least 4,366.<\/p>\n<p>_Confirmed U.S. military wounded (hostile) as of Nov. 30, 2009: 31,572.<\/p>\n<p>_Confirmed U.S. military wounded (non-hostile, using medical air transport) as of Oct. 31, 2009: 39,232.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I did expect that; it&#8217;s not unusual that many more troops are injured in accidents than in combat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>_U.S. military deaths for November 2009: 11, one of the lowest monthly death tolls since the war began.<\/p>\n<p>_Deaths of civilian employees of U.S. government contractors as of Sept. 30, 2009: 1,442.<\/p>\n<p>_Iraqi deaths in November 2009 from war-related violence: at least 93, the lowest full monthly figure since The Associated Press began tracking Iraqi deaths in May 2005<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d snark that it&#8217;s more dangerous to be a civilian in Chicago than an American serviceman in Iraq &#8211; but <a href=\"http:\/\/bobmccarty.com\/2009\/01\/03\/number-of-chicago-murders-in-2008-tops-number-of-us-soldier-deaths-but-medias-not-reporting-it\/\">that&#8217;s been true for almost two years<\/a>.\u00a0 What <em>is <\/em>shocking is that the death rate, per capita, isn&#8217;t a whole lot different than the <a href=\"http:\/\/mappingforjustice.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/chicago-murder-report.html\">per capita murder rate in Chicago <\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>_Assassinated Iraqi academics as of Nov. 23, 2009: 432.<\/p>\n<p>_Journalists killed on assignment as of Dec. 1, 2009: 141.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What?\u00a0 No count of lawyers and &#8220;reality TV superstars?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>COST:<\/p>\n<p>_Over $705 billion, according to the National Priorities Project.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cheaper than healthcare, and has the salutary effect of killing Al Quaeda terrorists.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>OIL PRODUCTION:<\/p>\n<p>_Prewar: 2.58 million barrels per day.<\/p>\n<p>_Nov. 24, 2009: 2.34 million barrels per day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Halliburton!\u00a0 Halliburton!\u00a0 Halliburton!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>ELECTRICITY:<\/p>\n<p>_Prewar nationwide: 3,958 megawatts.
