{"id":67525,"date":"2018-07-30T11:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T16:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=67525"},"modified":"2018-07-30T06:55:30","modified_gmt":"2018-07-30T11:55:30","slug":"printing-up-outrage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=67525","title":{"rendered":"Printing Up Outrage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>SCENE:\u00a0 Mitch BERG is shopping for guitar strings at a local music store.\u00a0 Engrossed in thought, he doesn&#8217;t notice as Mylussa SILBERMAN,\u00a0National Public Radio\u2019s Saint Paul bureau correspondent \u2013 walks up behind him<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 Mr. Berg.<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 (<em>startled, a little disappointed<\/em>) Oh, hi, mijzz&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 Criminals are going to start printing 3D guns.\u00a0 And the NRA seems to think it&#8217;s a wonderful thing.<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 Let me get this straight.\u00a0 You believe a criminal &#8211; a moron who thinks it&#8217;s better to rob someone than to earn the money &#8211; is going to run over to a pal&#8217;s house who has a very high-end 3D printer &#8211; costing several thousand dollars, by the way &#8211; and leave you with a gun that fires one, count it, one single shot, with an effective accurate range of about the inside of a phone booth, that is about the size of a cordless drill:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g3eDSGVsLQU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;that might have a service life of 10 rounds, and is loaded by removing the <em>entire barrel\u00a0<\/em>to reload a single bullet\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s actually slower to shoot that an flintlock musket; I&#8217;d think that&#8217;d make you happy.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 \u00a0But the plans can be downloaded!\u00a0 For free!<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 \u00a0Sure.\u00a0 And for an overall cost greater than going to the store and buying 2-6 high-quality pistols or even rifles loaded from magazines,\u00a0 with service lives of tens of thousands of rounds.\u00a0 Or several such guns purchased from the illegal black market.\u00a0 \u00a0Not to mention infinitely higher than stealing a functional, quality gun.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 The NRA supports anyone being able to print a gun!<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 Wait &#8211; I thought they were lobbyists for the big bad gun industry?\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t this undercut them?<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 \u00a0Moving right along &#8211; this means people\u00a0 can print AR15s!<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 \u00a0You can print the\u00a0<em>lower receiver<\/em> &#8211; which is sort of the like the frame of a car, the part that all the other parts get attached to.\u00a0 And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ar15+lower+receiver&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS710US710&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiX8qvH3MbcAhVkGTQIHY99AeEQ_AUICygC&amp;biw=1385&amp;bih=644#imgrc=Jbnks8Yw8qT0nM:\">they&#8217;re already available for well under $100<\/a>, in a form that&#8217;ll actually function for years without meltinig and wearing out.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 \u00a0Well, we can&#8217;t use that.<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 Of that I have no doubt.\u00a0 \u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know you played guitar.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN:\u00a0 I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 I&#8217;m here doing an article on cultural appropriation in music.<\/p>\n<p>BERG:\u00a0 Naturally.<\/p>\n<p><em>And SCENE<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCENE:\u00a0 Mitch BERG is shopping for guitar strings at a local music store.\u00a0 Engrossed in thought, he doesn&#8217;t notice as Mylussa SILBERMAN,\u00a0National Public Radio\u2019s Saint Paul bureau correspondent \u2013 walks up behind him SILBERMAN:\u00a0 Mr. Berg.
