{"id":66861,"date":"2018-05-18T11:00:19","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T16:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=66861"},"modified":"2018-05-18T06:29:48","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T11:29:48","slug":"resist-the-authoritarians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=66861","title":{"rendered":"Resist The Authoritarians!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at\u00a0<em>Power Line<\/em>, Paul Mirengoff asks a question that is redolent with parallels for anyone that lives in a Democrat-dominated area:\u00a0 \u00a0if a government is truly authoritarian, nobody wants to be pegged as a &#8220;Resister&#8221; &#8211; for example, to be placed on an &#8220;enemies list&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re on an enemies list in a genuinely authoritarian country &#8211; Franco&#8217;s Spain, Pinochet&#8217;s Chile, Argentina in the sixties and seventies &#8211; being an &#8220;enemy&#8221; meant midnight knocks on the door and cars snatching people off streets and goons hauling off classrooms full of college kids.<\/p>\n<p>In the parts of the US that voted for Hillary and melted down when Trump won, &#8220;resistance&#8221; means a latte in the morning after pilates, before a vigorous session of screaming at people on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Mirengoff looks at &#8220;authoritarian&#8221; (according to the current leftist whinging) Hungary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2018\/05\/15\/two-hundred-names-appeared-on-an-enemies-list-in-hungary-thousands-more-asked-to-join\/?utm_term=.eb844d8f7de0\">The Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0reports that a pro-government newspaper in Hungary published an \u201cenemies list.\u201d Political opponents of prime minister Viktor Orban promptly expressed outrage at not being on the list.<\/p>\n<p>One of them launched a petition demanding to be on the list. He invited others to join in that demand. Nearly 8,000 did.<\/p>\n<p>This tells me that Orban\u2019s government is not authoritarian. The Post eventually concedes as much. Deep into the story, it acknowledges that in Hungary \u201cthere is free expression, with opponents speaking out on television, newspapers, and on the streets.\u201d Earlier this month, when the new,\u00a0<em>elected<\/em>\u00a0parliament was sworn in, thousands of opponents rallied against Orban just outside the building.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trying to get Hungarians to\u00a0<em>stop\u00a0<\/em>expressing freely takes tanks, as the Soviets found.<\/p>\n<p>Liberals in the media are exercised because nearly every newspaper and media outlet in Hungary supports Orban (occording to journalists who oppose Orban and who aren&#8217;t, as it happens either unemployed or in jail).\u00a0 In other words, for\u00a0 being the same as the American media, but on the right&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over at\u00a0Power Line, Paul Mirengoff asks a question that is redolent with parallels for anyone that lives in a Democrat-dominated area:\u00a0 \u00a0if a government is truly authoritarian, nobody wants to be pegged as a &#8220;Resister&#8221; &#8211; for example, to be placed on an &#8220;enemies list&#8221;.
