{"id":65337,"date":"2017-12-07T05:00:23","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T11:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=65337"},"modified":"2017-12-06T17:47:36","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T23:47:36","slug":"tips-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=65337","title":{"rendered":"Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">History of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shootingillustrated.com\/articles\/2017\/5\/18\/the-mozambique-drill-a-history-and-how-to\/\">Mozambique drill for pistol shooters<\/a> or, as it\u2019s now called, the Failure Drill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">Some of the hot-shot commenters don\u2019t understand the reason for the break in shooting between the second and third shots.\u00a0 Why not keep shooting until the target is down?<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">Lawyers.\u00a0 You are only allowed to shoot so long as the attacker continues to pose an immanent threat to you. \u00a0\u00a0If you shot twice in the chest, the attacker drops his weapon and raises his hands to yell \u201cDon\u2019t Shoot Me, Bro!\u201d but you continue firing until you\u2019ve emptied your weapon, there\u2019s a good chance some prosecutor will charge you with murder.\u00a0 You were no longer in danger when you executed an unarmed man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">That\u2019s why the Failure Drill name is important, it reminds us we only take the third shot if the first two fail to accomplish the task.\u00a0 Bang, Bang, pause to assess while holding the gun on him, then Bang only if necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">How long is the pause?\u00a0 As long as it takes to decide you\u2019re still under attack.\u00a0 Half a second seems like the bare minimum to me.\u00a0 In the original Mozambique drill, you lowered your weapon to the ready position pointing at the ground after the second shot and raised it again to fire the third shot.\u00a0 That cannot be done in less than a second, probably more like two seconds to reacquire the sight picture.\u00a0 Since we\u2019re not lowering our weapon, we can act more quickly but it still will take about a second to wait, assess, acquire a sight picture on the head, fire the third shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">That also gives us a better story for the witness stand.\u00a0 \u201cI only shot him because I was under attack. \u00a0And when he persisted, I had to shoot him again.\u00a0 It\u2019s entirely his decision to continue the attack that ended his life so I am innocent of murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">In contrast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O8QrWm3Acc0\">this guy is doing it completely wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">Joe Doakes<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Learn from others&#8217; mistakes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails: History of the Mozambique drill for pistol shooters or, as it\u2019s now called, the Failure Drill.
