opioids can become addicted to them<\/a>.<\/p>\nThere is a problem.\u00a0 People who receive medical treatment have privacy rights.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know who\u2019s doing the prescribing, who\u2019s doctor-shopping, who\u2019s obtaining prescriptions only to sell them.<\/p>\n
There are proposed solutions, but they\u2019re mostly paperwork regulations that have no more effect on real-world issues than putting up a Drug Free Zone sign on a schoolhouse door. \u00a0More warning labels won\u2019t help: people take the medicine doctors prescribe because we trust doctors.\u00a0 Restricting prescriptions won\u2019t solve the end problem: no doctor prescribes heroin and people who self-medicate their personal problems with drugs will obtain them illegally, as they always have.\u00a0 Adding a new federal registry of sensitive information on individuals \u2013 does the word \u201cEquifax\u201d ring any bells?<\/p>\n
\u201cOpioid\u201d is simply the new word for \u201cnarcotic\u201d which has been a staple in the War on Drugs since Coke took cocaine out of its soft-drink 100 years ago.\u00a0 The problem isn\u2019t the tool, the problem is the tool user.<\/p>\n
