{"id":64737,"date":"2017-10-10T11:00:57","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T16:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=64737"},"modified":"2017-10-10T20:41:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T01:41:13","slug":"an-inconvenient-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=64737","title":{"rendered":"An Inconvenient Response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times actually <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/06\/opinion\/reducing-gun-violence.html?smprod=nytcore-ipad&amp;smid=nytcore-ipad-share&amp;referer=http:\/\/m.facebook.com\">gets something about gun violence right<\/a>, in an article that almost belongs in a legitimate source of news.<\/p>\n<p>While the MSM &#8211; including the\u00a0<em>NYTimes&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>own editorial page &#8211; is blubbering about the same old narrative driven gun grab schemes, none of which have ever affected or will ever affect crime, this piece notes that there are ideas that\u00a0<em>have\u00a0<\/em>affected crime rates without gutting the civil liberties of the law-abiding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p-block\">In the 1990s, a highly effective gun violence reduction strategy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hub\/71705\/file-2141494158-pdf\/_DOCUMENTS\/CaseStudy_TheBostonGunProjectAndOperationCeasefire_2005.pdf?t=1431722966085\">was developed\u00a0<\/a>in Boston by a group including law enforcement officers, researchers, and black clergy members. According to the National Institute of Justice, it resulted in a 63 percent reduction in the average monthly number of youth homicide victims in that city, an accomplishment that was called \u201cthe Boston Miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-block\">Since then, variations of that strategy have been implemented in cities across the country. For example, according to a study by the Campbell Collaboration, a nonprofit organization that evaluates the effects of this type of intervention,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nnscommunities.org\/uploads\/Braga_Pulling_Levers_Campbell_Collaboration.pdf\">Stockton, Calif., saw a 42 percent reduction in its monthly count of gun homicides<\/a>in the first year of the strategy\u2019s implementation; similarly, Oakland, Calif., saw just under a 30 percent reduction. (In 2017, the city is on track to have its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucrdatatool.gov\/Search\/Crime\/Local\/RunCrimeJurisbyJuris.cfm\">second-lowest homicide rate in over 30 years.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, for much of the &#8220;gun safety&#8221; movement, it&#8217;s not about solving crime; Diane Feinstein and Chuck Schumer care less about the lives of poor black and brown people than David Duke ever did.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about controlling society.<\/p>\n<p>But if you leave that out, it&#8217;s an excellent article, and well worth a read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times actually gets something about gun violence right, in an article that almost belongs in a legitimate source of news.
