{"id":63721,"date":"2017-07-06T05:00:56","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T10:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=63721"},"modified":"2017-07-05T23:27:08","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T04:27:08","slug":"profiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=63721","title":{"rendered":"Profiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A shopper at a Roseville liquor store was upset that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/mgm-saint-paul-4\">store management wanted to check her large bag<\/a>.\u00a0 She was at the store on Sunday with about a dozen people, picketing, signs saying \u201cMGM Racist\u201d and \u201cTreat Everyone Equally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maryam S., the person who complained on YELP on 7-1-17, says MGM never checks anybody\u2019s bags.\u00a0 That\u2019s how she knows she was singled out.\u00a0 Scroll past a few Fake Reviews by Social Justice Warriors from places like Arlington, Virginia and Apple Valley (who obviously never shop there), you find a review from Gnos G. dated six weeks before the complaint, another Asian whose bags got searched.<\/p>\n<p>Maryam says when she called the owner, she was told that searching bags is carefully limited to people whose conduct is suspicious.\u00a0 The owner pointed out that historically, most shoplifting in that store has been done by Black shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you were not singled out to be searched, Maryam, because searching bags has been store policy for weeks (and that sign has been on the door for years \u2013 I know because that\u2019s my regular liquor store). \u00a0And you were not profiled for being Asian, they check Black people\u2019s bags, too.<\/p>\n<p>Searching large bags in a store is not racism.\u00a0 It\u2019s loss prevention.\u00a0 If you worked in retail instead of being an Emergency Room Doctor at St. John\u2019s Hospital, you\u2019d know that. \u00a0I realize it\u2019s jarring to suddenly find yourself being treated unfairly because of what other people have done in the past.\u00a0 Believe me, I know exactly how that feels.<\/p>\n<p>I am constantly berated for having White Privilege.\u00a0 The fact that long ago and far away some White people mistreated some Black people doesn\u2019t mean that THIS White person has mistreated any Black people. \u00a0I never owned any slaves, no Black person living in Minnesota today toted any bales of cotton, so using the same logic as Maryam\u2019s example, I shouldn\u2019t have to hear another damn word about White Privilege.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s that you say?\u00a0 Embedded in the culture?\u00a0 Indirect beneficiary of other people\u2019s crimes?\u00a0 Guilt by association?
