SCENE: Mitch BERG is trying out a guitar at a local music shop. As he begins to fingerpick the intro to “1957 Vincent Black Lightning”, Avery LIBRELLE enters the store, sees BERG, and walks up behind him.<\/em><\/p>\n

LIBRELLE:Merg!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Er, hey, Avery. \u00a0What’s up?<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0We know you crazy gun nuts don’t care how many children die for your so called “right to keep and bear arms” -= but why do you oppose funding for basic public health research? What are you afraid of?<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Afraid? \u00a0Nothing. \u00a0 \u00a0Absolutely certain of what the criminal-safetyi movement means by “science?” \u00a0Now you’re on to something.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0Why? \u00a0Afraid of\u00a0science<\/em>?<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Hardly. \u00a0More like “Pretty certain nothing resembling “science” will take place<\/p>\n

Here’s a great example; this message went out yesterday:<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0So?<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0So? \u00a0A survey using a self-selected \u00a0group of particpants, recruited\u00a0by an anti-gun group<\/em>? \u00a0Real “public health”, or even sociological or demographic –\u00a0\u00a0research uses random subjects from a representative population – not people cherry-picked by a constituent that’s looking for a specific result. \u00a0And a control group? \u00a0Forget about it.<\/p>\n

That’s not “science”. \u00a0It’s not even demography. \u00a0It’s public relations and politics. \u00a0 If you call it “science”, you’re misrepresenting yourself and, yes, science itself.<\/p>\n

Oh yeah – and in the fine print of the message, it says the “researchers” will likely quote you unless the results of the “study” are under a confidentiality agreement.<\/p>\n

This isn’t science. This barely qualifies as group slander. \u00a0Anyone putting this, or its results, out there as “science” should be charged, at least rhetorically, with malpractice.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0Check your privelege, racist.<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Naturally.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0And you need…<\/p>\n
