Students at Yale are on a hunger strike<\/a>.\u00a0 Except when they\u2019re not.<\/p>\nThis is the epitome of Liberalism in action: claiming the intention is as good as the deed and deserves just as much credit.<\/p>\n
The Senate had a rule that any member may filibuster a bill and until the filibuster was ended (by the member or by a super-majority voting to end discussion on the bill), no other business could take place.\u00a0 Jimmy Stewart talks for hours in the famous movie about a filibuster.<\/p>\n
Except that\u2019s hard work.\u00a0 And we can\u2019t get anything else done.\u00a0 So the new method is members file a \u201cnotice of intent to filibuster\u201d and that\u2019s sufficient to take the bill out of consideration.\u00a0 It\u2019s simply tabled while the Senate moves on to other business.\u00a0 More efficient, you see.\u00a0 Better for members\u2019 health.\u00a0 Safer.<\/p>\n
Yes, but the point of the filibuster was to actually halt the business of the Senate until they address one member\u2019s objection. \u00a0If it\u2019s a big enough deal that a member is willing to stand there all day solely to bring the business of government to a complete halt, then it\u2019s a big enough deal to receive serious consideration by the rest of the members.<\/p>\n
These students aren\u2019t having a \u2018hunger strike,\u2019 they\u2019ve filed a \u2018notice of intent to strike\u2019 believing the word is the same as the act and carries the same moral weight.\u00a0 Can\u2019t imagine where they got that idea.<\/p>\n
