{"id":62546,"date":"2017-03-28T10:29:44","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T15:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=62546"},"modified":"2017-03-28T10:30:25","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T15:30:25","slug":"the-mission-for-today-and-the-next-10-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=62546","title":{"rendered":"The Mission For Today &#8211; And The Next 10 Months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As this is being published, there&#8217;s a hearing going on down at the State Office Building.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, let&#8217;s run down the current situation for the two Second Amendment bills we&#8217;ve been following:<\/p>\n<p><b>Deadlines And Commitments<\/b>: \u00a0As of today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Constitutional Carry&#8221; is pretty much dead for this session; House Public Safety passed it, but it never went to the floor, since the Senate never passed a companion bill. \u00a0It&#8217;s not been added to the House version of the Public Safety omnibus bill, since the Senate isn&#8217;t adding it. \u00a0It&#8217;s effectively over &#8211; for now.<\/li>\n<li>The Self Defense Reform bill &#8211; which, in cases of otherwise-legal self-defense, would take away a county-prosecutor&#8217;s discretion to try to send you to jail\u00a0for not running as fast and as far as\u00a0<em>he thinks you should\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; looks like it&#8217;s in the same situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not. \u00a0Not quite.<\/p>\n<p>Stay with me, here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Long Game<\/strong>: \u00a0At the hearings \u00a0House Public Safety Committee is going to be voting on Represe<a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.leg.state.mn.us\/bills\/billnum.asp?Billnumber=HF238&amp;ls_year=90&amp;session_year=2017&amp;session_number=0\">ntative Nash&#8217;s Self-Defense Reform bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After which it will go to the floor for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>You might way &#8220;What&#8217;s the point? \u00a0There&#8217;s no Senate companion! \u00a0 It&#8217;s dead!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;d be right. \u00a0For this session.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the deal; if it passes from the floor this session\u00a0&#8211; the first of the biennium &#8211; <em>it remains passed for the next session<\/em>. \u00a0We don&#8217;t need to pass it in the House again for two more years, if needed.<\/p>\n<p>This means we&#8217;ll have ten months to pressure the Senate into listening to the real will of the people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What this mean: \u00a0<\/strong>Your job &#8211; our job &#8211; is, if not crystal clear, at least vital:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Today<\/strong> &#8211; as in, today &#8211; call the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.leg.state.mn.us\/cmte\/Home\/?comm=90019\">members of the House Public Safety Committee<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0Tell them this needs to pass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Before The Bill Comes To The Floor<\/strong> (and I&#8217;ll let you know when it does): \u00a0 \u00a0Call your representative. \u00a0Tell them you will\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>be amused if HF 238 isn&#8217;t passed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Before the next session<\/strong>: \u00a0Get on the horn with your Senator. \u00a0Their leadership just missed a golden opportunity to score a win with three whole years before their next election. \u00a0They can still do it with two years of cushion. \u00a0Don&#8217;t blow it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get on this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As this is being published, there&#8217;s a hearing going on down at the State Office Building.
