{"id":62346,"date":"2017-03-06T11:00:41","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T17:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=62346"},"modified":"2017-03-05T12:17:01","modified_gmt":"2017-03-05T18:17:01","slug":"the-delicious-dish-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=62346","title":{"rendered":"The Delicious Dish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s fun to make fun of National Public Radio.<\/p>\n<p>The upper-middle-class white liberal bias; the pretentious production style; the air staff&#8217;s frequently sloppy, mannered delivery; the unearned condescension to all other media; if you&#8217;re a radio person, the massive budgets and huge staffs combined with the often dismal state of practice of the radio craft; the complete inability to do a show off-script (listening to NPR reporters trying to ad-lib on the morning of 9\/11 would have been funny under less dire circumstances) &#8211; I mean, Terri Gross is considered a brilliant broadcaster because&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;she can\u00a0<em>freestyle an interview\u00a0<\/em>(or at least be made to sound like she&#8217;s freestyling after repeated cycles of NPR&#8217;s obsessive editing).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fun to make fun of public radio:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IZjV_mrHyWs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For all that? \u00a0There are shows I do like. \u00a0I enjoyed\u00a0<em>Prairie Home Companion\u00a0<\/em>while Garrison Keillor hosted it (while ignoring and mocking his puerile politics), and might like it even more with Chris Thile at the helm. \u00a0MPR&#8217;s news does an adequate job of seeking balance &#8211; not perfect, not great, but adequate, which means if you grade on a curve against other media they rate an A. \u00a0\u00a0<em>On Being\u00a0<\/em>with Krista Tippett can be an incredibly interesting show.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s been &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splendidtable.org\/about-splendid-table\">Splendid Table<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0 For a couple decades, now Lynn Rossetto Kasper has been hosting the show &#8211; and by &#8220;hosting&#8221;, I mean &#8220;saving it from the suffocating, self-parodying cliches that\u00a0<em>are\u00a0<\/em>most public radio&#8221;. \u00a0 \u00a0Rossetto\u00a0Kasper brought an air of engagement, mirth&#8230;<em>fun\u00a0<\/em>to \u00a0the show, and to a subject that inspires all too much leaden foodie navel-gazing.<\/p>\n<p>Brought.<\/p>\n<p>Rossetto Kasper is retiring from the show after 21 seasons. \u00a0She&#8217;s being replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splendidtable.org\/bio\/francis-lam\">Francis Lam<\/a>, former top foodie at NYTimes Magazine and an accomplished chef in his own right. \u00a0He clearly knows his food.<\/p>\n<p>I got my first, er, taste of Mr. Lam&#8217;s style this past weekend. \u00a0And it&#8217;s dreadful.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to put part of the blame on whomever produces and edits the show &#8211; and being an American Public Media (the production spinoff of MPR) joint, God only kjnows who that is, since like most APM shows it&#8217;s got a staff list longer than a Michael Bay movie. \u00a0But whoever it is who decided on Mr. Lam&#8217;s broadcast style seems to have given the directive; &#8220;Don&#8217;t just\u00a0<em>do\u00a0<\/em>public radio clich\u00e9; define and supercharge them!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A paraphrased, but typical, piece of a Lam interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>LAM: \u00a0So tell us about [whatever].<\/p>\n<p>GUEST: \u00a0I&#8217;m glad you asked. \u00a0It&#8217;s really about [interesting explanation redacted]<\/p>\n<p>LAM: \u00a0Ah. \u00a0[&#8230;several seconds of exaggerated pause, apparently to connote depth and thoughtfulness&#8230;]. \u00a0Interesting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So yeah, the editing was dreadful.<\/p>\n<p>But Lam himself comes across as&#8230;oh, drat, now I have to go into my thesaurus to find new terms to describe the clich\u00e9s of the public radio delivery. \u00a0Lugubrious? \u00a0Disconnected? \u00a0Stylized to the point of caricature? \u00a0I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;ll improve. \u00a0Maybe it was an isolated episode.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe, in the era of Trump, Public Radio is making a concerted effort to be\u00a0<em>more\u00a0<\/em>pompous,\u00a0<em>more\u00a0<\/em>caricaturish, and\u00a0<em>less\u00a0<\/em>accessible to the plebeians.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope for improvement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s fun to make fun of National Public Radio.
