{"id":61464,"date":"2016-12-23T11:15:58","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T17:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=61464"},"modified":"2016-12-23T11:26:39","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T17:26:39","slug":"they-are-so-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=61464","title":{"rendered":"They Are So Close&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>SCENE: \u00a0Mitch BERG is leaving Alary&#8217;s after a Bears game, when he runs into MyLyssa SILBERMAN, reporter for National Public Radio&#8217;s Saint Paul bureau. \u00a0Dressed in a hemp power skirt, her brunette-but-slightly-prematurely-gray hair cut into the style known as &#8220;ELCA Hair&#8221;, she is on her way from her Lowertown condo to the MPR building. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN: \u00a0(<em>In her &#8220;NPR&#8221; voice &#8211; a nasal brogue that bespeaks an Ivy League education, and sounds like it may have ironic clarinet music in the background<\/em>) Mr. \u00a0Berg.<\/p>\n<p>BERG: \u00a0 Oh, hello, MyLyssa.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN: \u00a0So you&#8217;re still a Second Amendment activist?<\/p>\n<p>BERG: \u00a0I am.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN: \u00a0And you oppose closing the &#8220;Gun Show Loophole&#8221; with mandatory registration?<\/p>\n<p>BERG: \u00a0Yep.<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN: \u00a0Why? \u00a0It&#8217;s clearly commonsense.<\/p>\n<p>BERG: \u00a0I&#8217;m going to refute you with an NPR story. \u00a0 Yesterday, NPR reported that the Obama Administration has done away with a 9\/11-era program that allowed the creation of a registry of people from several countries linked to terrorist activities. \u00a0 (BERG draws iPhone from pocket, shuffles through to find a recording). \u00a0I believe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/12\/22\/506625961\/white-house-moves-to-block-creation-of-muslim-registry\">this\u00a0the report<\/a>, from NPR&#8217;s Tom Gjelten:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GJELTEN: Among those who would speak out &#8211; the American Civil Liberties Union. Hina Shamsi is the national security director there.<\/p>\n<p>HINA SHAMSI: We would absolutely oppose this program. And as we have said, if this form of discriminatory registry is put in place, we stand ready to sue and to challenge it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(BERG<em> stops the recording<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>SILBERMAN: \u00a0Right. \u00a0So?<\/p>\n<p>BERG: \u00a0Listen to this next bit. \u00a0I&#8217;ll crank up the volume for a few parts&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GJELTEN: A new registry could bring out law-abiding Muslims.
