As a German speaker, I was surprised and delighted to see that the American English word “shitstorm” has been adapted to German. \u00a0 \u00a0The new German word\u00a0shitstorm<\/em> is a vernacular for, well, a shitstorm.<\/p>\n

Of course, while the word is an FCC violation in the US, the English word “shit” itself has no meaning in German (the word\u00a0Schei\u00dfgewitter<\/em>\u00a0would be both vulgar and a little meaningless in German). \u00a0 \u00a0So, unlike in English, the term “shitstorm” can be used in polite company…<\/p>\n

…because the loaded, offensive term loses its meaning outside its native language.<\/p>\n

The moral of the story: \u00a0words that are adopted into foreign languages don’t\u00a0necessarily\u00a0<\/em>bring with them their native baggage.<\/p>\n

Or to put it more concisely? \u00a0Context matters<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After a decade and a half of illiterately hinting, tittering and referring\u00a0to conservatives of all stripes as one variety of “Nazi” or another, the left and its PR flaks\u00a0in the mainstream media are shocked,\u00a0shocked\u00a0<\/em>I tell you<\/a>, that someone is…pre-literately invoking a Nazi reference:<\/p>\n

When a video of two Donald Trump supporters shouting \u201cL\u00fcgenpresse\u201d (lying press) started to circulate Sunday, viewers from Germany soon noted its explosive nature. The defamatory word was most frequently used in Nazi Germany. Today, it is a common slogan among those branded as representing the \u201cugly Germany\u201d: members of xenophobic, right-wing groups.<\/p>\n

Its use across the Atlantic Ocean at a Trump rally\u00a0has worried Germans who know about its origins all too well.\u00a0Both the Nazi regime and the East German government made use of it, turning it into an anti-democracy slogan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And if you’re German, commenting about German politics, that’s certainly rife with portent.<\/p>\n

And if you think that the bobbleheads who used the term at the rally knew all that history, and knowingly thought that was the subtext, by all means, provide some evidence of it.<\/p>\n

Because what the term literaly means is “Lying Press”. \u00a0Stripped of any historical context, that is\u00a0all\u00a0<\/em>it means.<\/p>\n

And while the Washington Post in the article above calls the term “defamatory”, truth negates a charge of defamation. \u00a0Our press\u00a0does\u00a0<\/em>have bias,\u00a0does\u00a0<\/em>lie about it,\u00a0and is\u00a0<\/a><\/em>in the tank for Hillary Clinton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What sort of\u00a0Schei\u00dfgewitter<\/em> is it going to take for our lapdog media to confront this?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
