{"id":60680,"date":"2016-10-26T11:30:47","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T16:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60680"},"modified":"2016-10-24T10:40:57","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T15:40:57","slug":"a-luddite-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60680","title":{"rendered":"A Luddite Of Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been deeply ambivalent about &#8220;the Internet Of Things&#8221; (IoT) for as long as geeks\u00a0\u00a0have been jabbering about it.<\/p>\n<p>Now, bear in mind, I work in technology; I design how people and technology (at various levels) interact. \u00a0My home office looks like Chloe O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s cubicle, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.premierguitar.com\/ext\/resources\/archives\/746d7880-ca1a-4e11-977b-d231d86b719a.JPG\">Vernon Reid&#8217;s effects rig<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But I gotta draw the line at an internet that communicates between discrete machines and the people who run them.<\/p>\n<p>Net-controlled home security? \u00a0Cars? \u00a0Ubiquitous online connections to everything we interact with in life?<\/p>\n<p>Well, not after last Friday, where apparently cheap, insecure IoT devices in various online-enabled appliances &#8211; DVRs, video cameras and the like &#8211; were <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/this-is-probably-why-half-the-internet-shut-down-today-1788062835\">harnessed by incredibly sophisticated hackers to launch a denial of service attack<\/a> that took down vast swathes of the internet.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll drive my own car and lock my own doors, thanks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been deeply ambivalent about &#8220;the Internet Of Things&#8221; (IoT) for as long as geeks\u00a0\u00a0have been jabbering about it.
