{"id":60451,"date":"2016-09-28T08:17:59","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T13:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60451"},"modified":"2016-09-28T08:17:59","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T13:17:59","slug":"spoils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60451","title":{"rendered":"Spoils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can not conceal my joy at the death of\u00a0<em>Gawker,\u00a0<\/em>the website that did more than any other to make the internet useless.<\/p>\n<p>Hulk Hogan &#8211; who pulled off the nearly-impossible by winning a defamation case against Denton while still a public figure &#8211; is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3808131\/Hulk-Hogan-drops-1-6-million-beach-house-door-months-winning-140-million-Gawker-lawsuit.html\">reveling in the spoils of his victory<\/a>. \u00a0And while I&#8217;ve never given a rat&#8217;s damn about professional wrestling, I say &#8220;good on him&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Denton&#8217;s media buddies are circling the wagons, funding (<a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2016\/09\/16\/muckrock-and-motherboard-launc.html\">after a fashion) a fellowship<\/a> to report on Peter Thiel, the Silicon Valley innovator and billionaire who helped fund Hogan&#8217;s suit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Or maybe you think that the public could benefit from better understanding of Thiel\u2019s bold, nuanced vision of free speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to help the CPJ defend the rights of online journalists,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconvalleywatcher.com\/mt\/archives\/2009\/10\/cpj_announces_f.php\">Thiel has previously stated<\/a>, announcing his substantial support for the Committee for the Protection of Journalists. That support overlapped with the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/12\/paypal-wikileaks\/\">PayPal famously froze WikiLeak\u2019s account at the request of lawmakers<\/a>, and before he was revealed to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ryanmac\/2016\/05\/24\/this-silicon-valley-billionaire-has-been-secretly-funding-hulk-hogans-lawsuits-against-gawker\/#53739f4a7805\">secretly bankrolled a series of lawsuits to bankrupt the independent publisher Gawker<\/a>, an act <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/26\/business\/dealbook\/peter-thiel-tech-billionaire-reveals-secret-war-with-gawker.html\">he called<\/a> \u201cone of my greater philanthropic things that I\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dear mainstream media; &#8220;free speech has consequences, if it&#8217;s defamation&#8221; isn&#8217;t &#8220;nuanced&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can not conceal my joy at the death of\u00a0Gawker,\u00a0the website that did more than any other to make the internet useless.
